A Little History
For the purpose of this article, I am going to focus on Henry Pym and Scott Lang.
You may ask yourself, “Why not talk about Eric O’Grady?”
That is a great question.
Simply put, Eric O’Grady = Piece of Shi…Garbage.
Hank Pym was the original Ant-Man. First appearing in Tales of Suspense, issue #27 and was written as an incredibly intelligent scientist.
His chief discovery becomes the discovery of sub-atomic particles that he called Pym Particles.
In his first shrinking episode, he ended up in an anthill. Sigh, where else would he end up but an anthill? Believe it or not, he lost his way and it took him quite some time to escape (probably should have left breadcrumbs behind). When he finally did he used the particles to regrow back to normal size.
This little adventure inspired him to study ants and to create a helmet that would allow him to communicate/control them. This would be the first of a little foreshadowing into the personality of Hank Pym. As it turns out, Pym is an emotional wreck and an abuser…this was the first of many control issues he had.
That basically wraps up Hank Pym.
He would go on to leave the Ant-Man persona behind, adopting many new identities:
- Giant Man
- Yellow Jacket
Oh…and before I forget, Henry Pym was responsible for the creation of the Wasp.
Double oh, he also created the Human-Hating Menace, Ultron.
Scott Lang is a far more interesting and relatable character…hence his popularity.
It’s important you know that Scott Lang is a criminal; plain and simple. His story picks up on the day that he is about to be let out of jail for good behavior. As a present for him, the Warden of the jail gets Scott an interview with Stark International for a security job.
How does a criminal get an interview for a security job you ask?
Scott is an electronics genius. He might even be more so than the workers at the Apple Bar.
While cleaning up his life at Stark International, he learns that his daughter, Cassie has been diagnosed with a heart condition that if left untreated, would kill her.
He quickly finds out that they only Doctor on the planet (yes, just one) has been kidnapped by Darren Cross of Cross Industries…
Well, believe it or not, Darren Cross has the same problem as Cassie.
Being in line for the “Father of the Year” award, Scott does what any father would do…he goes back to his life of crime.
Scott robs a house that he would soon find out is the house of Henry Pym (Ant-Man). Noticing that the house contained the Ant-Man suit, Scott would steal it thereby increasing his chances to rescue the Doctor.
In their battle royal, Scott wound up on the winning end. You should know that this isn’t because Scott bested Darren. Quite the opposite. It was because the Doctor who performed the surgery on Darren committed malpractice. Instead of putting a new heart in, she simply put Darren’s old one back, leading to a mammoth lawsuit that never happened. You see, because of the malpractice, Darren keeled over and died in the fight.
With the Doctor now rescued, Scott would take the suit back to Hank to explain what he had done. This time, however, Hank is home and informs Scott that he knew what had happened. In fact, he was watching it the whole time.
He goes on to tell Scott to keep the suit, but only if he intends to use it for good. Now, if you think about that for just a second, you will see the irony of it. Hank is a wife-beating, split personality carrying, time bomb, who just asked someone to use the suit for good….
Am I wrong here?
If you know anything about comics, you know that everyone dies at least once. I bet you just might be wondering where along the line Scott died?
Long story, short…Jack of Hearts (yes this is a character) blows up the Avengers mansion with Scott in the area.
Are you wondering how he comes back to life?
Cassie, Scott’s daughter, goes back into time with Scarlet Witch to distract Scott while the instance is happening, thus preventing Scott from ever being there.
