A Little History

Scott Summers…you either love him or you hate him.

I have, to this day, never met a person in the middle.

He divides opinions like Moses dividing the Red Sea.

Why you ask?

My answer will probably give away the side that I am on, but…

…he is a whiner and a loser.

Scott Summers (Cyclops) was and original member of the X-Men. He was, and will forever be the first recruit of Professor Charles Xavier.

Scott is the son of Christopher (Corsair) and Katherine Summers.

While riding in their private plane, Scott, and his family were attacked by a Shi’ar Starship (aliens, and not the movie kind with the big ugly creatures trying to kill Ripley).

Scott’s mom was respectable mom. So much so that she threw the only parachute on Scott, strapped him and his brother Alex (Havok) to it and tossed them out of the plane.

Cyclops 1They, to put it nicely, crash landed on the ground, resulting in a year-long coma for Scott.  Cyclops cannot control his power without the use of a set of special goggles…this is directly a result of the coma.

Shortly thereafter, Scott and Alex were separated and tossed into two different orphanages.  Sadly, it would be quite some time before Scott would remember his brother due to the effects of the coma.

Scott’s powers emerged with he unintentionally shot a crane high above a building.  The crane dropped its load and Scott shot another blast to destroy what it was carrying.

Being a baby, he ran away and ended up in a partnership with a criminal (Living Diamond). In a stroke of luck, once Professor X heard about Scott, he rescued him.

From this point on, Scott’s history mirrors Jean Grey.

During the infamous Dark Phoenix Saga, he would watch Jean sacrifice herself to save the planet.

Thinking she was dead, he marries her clone (Madelyne Prior), has a baby (Cable) and lived a life of lies.

Yikes!

When Jean came back and destroyed Madelyne Prior, they reassumed their relationship.  This renewed relationship took them to the future so that they may raise Scott’s son, Cable.

From there…

Jean dies

…again.

Scott, being the stand-up man he is, moved on.  He started to date, Emma Frost and it was during this time that he became the true leader of the X-Men.

After the events of House of M, Scott was one of the lucky who got to keep his powers.  Seeing what was happening to his fellow mutants, Scott gathered them to an island called Utopia.

CyclopsUltimately, this created a schism between him and Wolverine….

…It gets better…

The Phoenix Force would return…again…and give its powers to 5 X-Men, with Scott being one of the five.

When all seemed lost for the Phoenix Force, it gave all its powers to Scott and he became the Dark Phoenix.

From this point on, Scott went crazy…and I mean crazy. He killed Professor X.

Facing grief for his actions, everybody’s favorite loser turned himself in.

Jail would not be strong enough for our baby, though.  He formed a group, broke out of jail and started a revolution.

So, there you have it, Scott Summers, love him or hate him. he is essential to the X-Men.
