Kevin Feige Discusses the Canonicity of ‘X-Men ‘97’ to the MCU: “It’s Actually Gone Back and Forth Quite a Few Times”

‘X-Men ’97’ is the latest Marvel Studios hit. The animated series is a continuation of the original X-Men show and so far, fans are pleased with the level of authenticity this revival has offered.

The episodes consistently show high ratings, with the story only getting better. It’s been renewed for season 2 ahead of release, and plans to work on season 3 are underway as we speak.

The show is officially part of the Marvel Animated Multiverse, but Kevin Feige admitted that at one point they did consider making it canon to the MCU, in his latest interview with Inverse.

It’s actually gone back and forth quite a few times, and I think we did land in a smart place because [X-Men: The Animated Series] was its own thing, and I think that to continue it we needed to be our own thing.

Feige is right in that statement that making ‘X-Men ’97’ would further complicate the already tangled MCU canon, and it would force other projects to acknowledge the X-Men to some degree before they debuted in live-action.

We’re getting the X-Men in this format and we’re doing it justice not just by ourselves, but also other fans as well, and we’re starting to get a resurgence of the X-Men in film again. I love that. And I think it’s great that we can have different things, let them be different.

Captain America’s shield did appear in the latest episode, but this still doesn’t mean that the show references the MCU directly in any sort of way.
