A Little History

What do you get when you have 1 Asgardian, 1 Frost Giant hybrid, a Mythical Hammer, a Funky Staff and a lifetime of vengeance?

You get Thor vs Loki.

Loki is a powerful being originating from Jotunheim but growing up in Asgard.  His father, recently killed by the once ruler of Asgard, Odin, felt shame for his son and kept him hidden.  Odin, taking his father, Bor’s words of wisdom, adopted Loki as his own.

Loki grew up in the house of Odin always playing second fiddle to his older, unrelated, brother Thor.  Loki’s hate for Thor and Odin would grow as time passed.

Did you go to high school?

Do you remember the prototypical jock?

Big, athletic and stupid?

That’s Thor in a nutshell.

Thor excelled in all areas of battle.

This enraged Loki so he began to investigate and learn sorcery.

Loki 1Loki is known as the God of Mischief and can seem a little childish at times.

There is this one instance where he noticed that Thor had an affliction for a woman named Sif.  To make her seem ugly, he cut her hair off while she slept.  Knowing that this was done at the hands of Loki, Thor ordered him to restore her hair.  He had it done by a couple of elves.

Let me ask you something…

If you get a service done for you but do not pay, what is the outcome?

Usually a terrible job, right?

In the instance of Sif’s hair, this was no different.  They replaced her hair, but instead of blonde, they made it black as the night.

In another one of his schemes, Loki found himself locked in an Asgardian Jail, only to escape.  Once escaped, he sought the help of Eldred the Sorcerer to teach him the black arts.  Now equipped he did what any good man would do and went to make a deal with the 100’ tall Fire Demon known as Surtur.

He then mated with Angerboda and she gave him the offspring of The Midgard Serpent, the Fenris Wolf and Hela, the Goddess of Death.

Loki was responsible for the formation of the Avengers.  During the Avengers #1 storyline, he tricked the Hulk into battling a dragon.  In an attempt to stop him, Iron Man, Wasp, Ant-Man and Thor, grouped together.  They were victorious and became known as the superhero team, The Avengers.

I have often talked about backfires and colossal mistakes in comics, but this one is the blunder of blunders.  This one is the mistake that is instantly regretted.  This one is the terrible one-night stand of comics.

Loki 2Over time, Loki would learn of the end of Asgard event known as Ragnarok. He would look to bring Asgard to its knees, again and again, only to be foiled by Thor and Odin.

Learning to set the motion of Ragnorok in place, an arrow needed to be shot at Balder, with it killing him. During this time, Loki bestowed a mortal man named Roger

During this time, Loki bestowed a mortal man named Roger Norvel (now Red) with power to equal Thor.  Red and Thor would battle, with Red ending up the victor.

Loki and his daughter, Hela led an army of giants, trolls, giants, the Midgard Serpent into Asgard to attack. Noticing that the prophecy would not be complete, Hela turned the Serpent on Red, killing him.

Odin, knowing that Thor’s death was tied to the events of Ragnarok, revived Red, allowing him to die in Thor’s place.

When you have a story that works, stick with it.

According to http://thescriptlab.com, there are 10 different scripts that Hollywood likes to recycle.

  1. Man vs Nature
  2. Man vs Himself
  3. Loss of Innocence
  4. Revenge
  5. Death as a Part of Life
  6. The Battle
  7. Individual vs Society
  8. Triumph over Adversity
  9. Love Conquers All
  10. Good vs Evil

In terms of Loki vs Thor storylines, Marvel seems to utilize similar themes.

  1. Ragnarok
  2. Ragnarok
  3. Ragnarok
  4. Ragnarok
  5. Ragnarok
  6. Ragnarok
  7. Ragnarok
  8. Ragnarok
  9. Ragnarok
  10. Ragnarok

I guess when you have something that works, don’t be afraid to use it?

Believe it or not, in another attempt at Ragnarok, Surtur employs his Ally, Malekith to see to it that Loki remained out of the conflict.  They took it so far that they had their lawyers draw up the paperwork.

Well, not actually, but they did have Loki sign a non-aggression pact.

If you remember, I did mention that Loki was “The God of Mischief”, right?

There is zero way he would stay out of this so he decided to side with Thor and Odin.

Here are the Coles Notes version of this Ragnorok:

  1. Odin sacrifices himself to imprison Surtur
  2. Ragnorok is stopped
  3. Loki attempts to take the newly vacant throne
  4. The population for some reason doesn’t trust him
  5. Thor goes to take the throne but has a spell cast on him
  6. Said spell turns Thor into a Frog.
  7. Frog still possesses power of Thor
  8. Loki is thwarted by a frog

Finally, the last and most important thing you need to know about Loki is that he occasionally cross-dresses, having taken the disguise of both Sif and the Scarlet Witch.

Scott’s Notes:

  1. From Jotunheim
  2. Father is killed
  3. Raised by Odin
  4. Plays second fiddle to Thor
  5. Continuously scheming to take the throne of Asgard
  6. Turns the lights down low with Angerboda
  7. Angerboda gives birth to 3 powerful creatures
  8. Learns of Ragnarok
  9. Attempts Ragnarok
  10. Learns of Ragnarok
  11. Attempts Ragnarok
  12. Learns of Ragnarok
  13. Attempts Ragnarok
  14. Learns of Ragnarok
  15. Attempts Ragnarok
  16. Learns of Ragnarok
  17. Attempts Ragnarok
