The Top 10 Most Powerful Avengers of All Time
Join the community on Reddit for the latest Marvel & DC news!
The Avengers, more than most superhero teams, have had a revolving door of heroes join and leave their ranks. Their ability to recruit new members is unparalleled in the Marvel Universe.
- Captain America
- Spider-Man
- Thor
- Black Widow
- The Incredible Hulk
- Hawkeye
- Vision
- Quicksilver
- Scarlet Witch
- Dr. Strange
- Beast
- Wolverine
- Iron Man
- Wasp
- Ant-Man
- Hercules
- Wonder Man
And so many more.
Having so many members can and will always raise debates. Who are the strongest? Who are the fastest? Which ones are the most important? Who are the smartest? Which ones shouldn’t even be an Avenger? Who are the most powerful?
It’s the last one that most intrigues me. Who are the most powerful? Looking at the small list above, it’s pretty obvious that it can be difficult to choose. Very difficult that it can, and has, broken friendships apart. Although it’s difficult, it’s not impossible.
Here are the top 10 most powerful Avengers of all time.
Ranked: The Top 10 Most Powerful Avengers of All Time
10. Iron Man
I feel it important to preface this inclusion by saying that I don’t actually enjoy the Iron Man character. For reasons all to myself, he just doesn’t resonate with me. My biases aside, he’s very deserving of being here.
Iron Man is, of course, Tony Stark and Tony Stark is Marvel’s resident genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist. Through his unheard of wealth and naturally gifted intelligence, Tony is the proud owner of the most advanced weapons suits on the market. These suits (MK III, MK IV, Extremis, Model 07, and others) grant Tony incredible power. With them, he can fly at supersonic speeds, has superhuman strength, speed, durability, agility, and reflexes, utilizes energy repulsor technology, and can project middles of all shapes and sizes.
Although his ego often gets in the way of his capabilities, there’s a reason that he’s one of the founding members of the Avengers.
9. Captain America
What hasn’t already been said about Captain America?
I mean, he was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a decade, has appeared on everything from lunchboxes to socks, has an origin that a toddler can recite, and is the leader of the Avengers.
Although his impressive set of abilities could easily land him on this list of the most powerful Avengers, they aren’t the reason he’s here. Captain America is the quintessential good guy. He’s always trying to find a way to do what’s right for those around him…even if it comes at a personal loss. Just look at Civil War. He stood against superhero registration because he believed that his friends shouldn’t have to give up their secret identities. As a result, he and his closest friends came to blows and nearly destroyed one another. Where he proved his ability to do what’s right happened when he realized the fighting caused more harm than good. As a result, he turned himself over to the authorities and ended the war.
Captain America is everything that a superhero should be. He’s kind, cares about those around him, puts others before himself, and isn’t afraid to die for what he believes. It’s these reasons that land him on this list.
8. Valkyrie
Valkyrie is the leader of the Valkyrior and the Valkyrior are some of, if not the fiercest warriors in all of Asgard. As an Asgardian, Valkyrie is immensely powerful. As an Avenger, Valkyrie‘s power is almost unrivaled.
In addition to the powers that always come with being Asgardian (strength, speed, durability, endurance, stamina, immunity, near-immortality, etc), Valkyrie is one of Asgard’s best fighters (perhaps just behind only Sif and/or Thor), can see when death is approaching, is able to transport herself and others to the realm of the dead, and wields the Dragonfang. The Dragonfang is a sword that is said to be carved from the tooth of an extra-dimensional dragon. Although the Dragonfang looks like a normal sword, it isn’t. The sword is both able to absorb magic and shatter mystical barriers.
7. Vision
First appearing in Avengers 57 back in October of 1968, Vision is as important to the Avengers as any and just about as powerful too.
Unlike Vision from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the comic book Vision didn’t get his power from an Infinity Stone. Instead, his power is derived from a Solar Jewel on his forehead. The Jewel absorbs ambient solar energy thereby allowing him to function, and project energy blasts. Through his ability to connect to another dimension Vision is able to both grow his density and become intangible. As a non-human being, Vision also possesses everything often associated with non-human beings. This includes but isn’t limited to superhuman speed, strength, intelligence, and durability. To say that Vision is the perfect ally is an understatement. Vision is so perfect that he sways the battle in favor of whichever team he is on.
Vision is arguably the most important addition to the Avengers since the team reformed in issue 16.
6. Hercules
When you’re modeled after a literal God, you’re bound to wind up on this list of the most powerful Avengers.
Hercules is the son of Zeus and that alone has marked him for greatness. Hercules can stand next to just about anyone in Marvel and decide whether or not they live or die. In fact, during an encounter with Thor, he picked up all of Manhattan and dumped it back down to the ground.
Not convinced that he should be here?
No problem.
Hercules can also run at speeds in excess of 100 mph, has taken down a Titan, can bring rocks to nothing but powder after hitting them, and he captured the three-headed dog, Cerberus.
If you’re still not convinced, remember this. It was Hercules who destroyed the Thor clone in Civil War and turned the tide for Captain America’s team.
5. The Incredible Hulk
A list like this just isn’t complete without the Incredible Hulk. His story is fairly well known. Bruce Banner was a scientist trying to find a way to harness the power of Gamma Rays. Unfortunately, while working and testing the rays (in the form of a bomb), his friend walked into the test field. Rather than standing by and watching his friend die, Bruce rushed into the test area and pushed them out of the way just before the bomb detonated. The accident left Bruce forever changed and as a result, each time his adrenaline rose, he uncontrollably changes into the Incredible Hulk.
As the Incredible Hulk Bruce has near-limitless strength, rarely tires is immune to telepathic attacks, is immortal, and possesses regenerative abilities.
Yep.
Like Wolverine and Deadpool, if the Hulk is injured in battle, he can repair himself on the spot.
4. Thor
There isn’t a person alive who would disagree with my inclusion of Thor on this list of the most powerful Avengers. Not only does his name include the word ‘mighty’, but he’s also gone toe to toe with the likes of The Hulk, Hercules, Loki, Mangog, and lived to tell the tale.
Thor is one of the founding Avengers and as such, is more integral to the team than peanut butter is to jelly. Thor is an Asgardian and because of this, is power defined. In addition to wielding one of the most powerful weapons in Marvel Comics, he possesses a strength that most can only dream of, can fly, is immune to most diseases, is near-immortal, and can control lightning. Thor is everything that power is. In fact, if power was fluid, it’d ooze out of his body.
3. Doctor Strange
When you’re capable of entering the Dark Dimension and defeating Dormammu, handling the everyday Earthbound adventures of the Avengers is a walk in the park.
In case you haven’t heard, Dr. Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme. As the Sorcerer Supreme, he’s charged with protecting the Earth from creatures and monsters that should only appear inside acid-induced hallucinations. Just look at this…
- Dormammu
- Urthona
- Satannish
- Umar
- Shuma-Gorath
- Nightmare
Yet, Dr. Strange isn’t one of the most powerful Avengers because of his enemies list. Nope. Not even close. Dr. Strange is one of the most powerful Avengers because each of these enemies doesn’t stand a chance against him on his worst day.
2. Sentry
Tell me if you’ve heard of Superman. You know, DC’s Superman. The Man of Steel. The Man of Tomorrow. Clark Kent. The Last Son of Krypton. The superhero who can do practically anything the writers dream up.
Now tell me if you’ve heard of Sentry.
If you haven’t, you should.
Sentry is Marvel’s answer to Superman. That is, like Superman, Sentry is so overpowered that it’s nearly impossible to find his villainous equal. Sentry possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, stamina, endurance, agility, reflexes, and intelligence. He’s also capable of regeneration, healing himself, resurrection, has x-ray, heat, infrared, telescopic, and microscopic vision, can teleport across the galaxy, is intangible, can shapeshift, is able to warp and manipulate time and space, and so much more.
Sentry is everything superheroes want to be but none can become. And why? Simple. As mentioned, it’s impossible to write a character with no equal.
1. Scarlet Witch
If you’ve ever wondered how powerful Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) is, read House of M. If you’re not too into reading, watch WandaVision. Whichever your preference is, both beautifully illustrate exactly what she’s capable of…Reality Manipulation.
Scarlet Witch is arguably the most powerful of all the Avengers. However, it’s not the happenings of House of M or WandaVision that show why. Instead, it’s what happens because of House of M that shows why.
House of M saw Wanda create an entirely new reality where no one inside it remembered anything before it. Wars were fought, lives were lost, and at its conclusion, Wanda had a total meltdown. As a consequence, she uttered the now-famous words “No more mutants” and brought the mutant population to its knees.
Before House of M the mutant population stood strong at multiple millions.
After it, just 198.
And that’s it. The top 10 most powerful Avengers of all time. What do you think? Who would make your most powerful Avengers list?
