A Little History
If you have read my bio on Cyclops you have probably realized that I am not a fan of his and truthfully, sadly the same can be said about Quicksilver.
If you are interested in knowing why I don’t particularly like Quicksilver, the reasons are many.
- He is a baby
- He has an unnatural fetish for his twin sister, Scarlet Witch
- He can’t quite decide where he wants to be in life
- He is a whiner
Quicksilver was born on Wundagore Mountain along with his twin sister.
After witnessing the intensity of his temper and the magnitude of his power, Magda, their mother, left her husband, who by the way was Magneto, and fled to this paradise. At this time, Magneto did not know that he had twins.
On Wundagore Mountain, Magda is helped by a half cow, half human creature called Bova.
Yeah, I know, half cow, half human.
That year, Magda was in the running for mother of the year and to cement her victory, after the birth of her children she ran away leaving the children to be raised by our friend, the cow.
So, Bova, the half cow creature realizes that the children need to be raised by a human, so she takes them to a nearby village and gives them to a couple by the name of Django and Marya Maximoff.
At this point, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch begin to notice funny things happening to them. You might be thinking puberty and you would be wrong. Quicksilver realizes that he has superhuman speed.
At about the same time, Scarlet Witch decides to do right in the world and saves a woman from a falling rock by using her powers, which, of course, angers the villagers and they chase the twins out of town.
During the chasing, Magneto shows up and saves the two of them.
Being much like normal teenagers, they don’t quite know what they want to be when they grow up. Because of this, they do what any normal person would do and the follow Magneto like a lost puppy, joining his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
In one of his many flip-flops, Quicksilver would be injured and found by his future wife, Crystal of the Inhumans.
Seeing a vulnerable man, she would bring him back to health and eventually bore him a child.
Proving, it is nearly impossible to find a good partner, Crystal would cheat on Quicksilver, leading to a brainwashing.
During his brainwashing, he would do the following:
- Frame the Avengers
- Lead an android group against them
- Fight the Fantastic Four
- Join a group of communists
Eventually, the brainwashing wears off and he joins yet another team in the Avengers West Coast.
I hope you can understand my distaste for him by now. It is not that Quicksilver isn’t an interesting character. It is my opinion that much like Psylocke, he is one of those characters that the writers just don’t know what to do with. He is used as a pawn in really terrible story arcs.
Oh, and his fascination with his sister is borderline incest.
Allow me to illustrate…
- Quicksilver is overprotective of Scarlet Witch.
- Wants to control what she does at all times.
- You get the feeling that he would date her if he could
- In an alternate world, he did date his sister
- Has her create a utopian world in which mutants rule
Yes, in the House of M storyline, the Avengers and the X-Men are called together to determine the fate of the Scarlet Witch. Fearing that she will be put to death, Quicksilver convinces her to create this world. Ultimately this backfires and she obliterates the mutant population, turning all but 198 of them to normal humans. Yes, our genius friend Quicksilver would be one of them.
Eventually, his powers would return and all would be well.
Now, I understand that I am probably going to receive some backlash for writing about him this way and that is ok.
I will admit, however, that both cinematic adaptations of him are great. That being said, you can’t erase 50 years of being a loser in just two movies.
- Twin brother to Scarlet Witch
- Son to Magneto
- Unsure which group he would like to belong to
- Member of Avengers, X-Men, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants
- Has Superhuman Speed
- Marries and Divorces Crystal of the Inhumans
- Has a daughter named Luna
- Was responsible for the House of M
- Great cinematic adaptations
