One of Marvel’s most popular superheroes is none other than New York’s resident crime fighter, Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock. While his life usually revolves around fighting crime either as a lawyer or vigilante, Daredevil has had time to pursue several relationships. What remains a fact is that the Man Without Fear has had a complicated love life as some of his relationships have ended tragically while others just run their course. As a result, one might wonder what his sexual orientation is. Is Daredevil gay, bisexual, or straight?
Daredevil is straight. In the comics, he was involved with various ladies, some in serious relationships while others merely flings. Most notably in the comics, his main love interests were Karen Page and Elektra. In the movies/TV series, he’s also involved with ladies, including Karen Page, Elektra, and most recently, She-Hulk.
This article will investigate Daredevil’s love interests in comics, movies, and TV shows to give a clear picture of his sexuality. Therefore, if this sounds like an interesting read, be sure to stick around for the full scoop!
Daredevil’s Romantic Interests in the Comics
Daredevil first made his foray into the comic world in April 1964’s Daredevil #1, and ever since, he’s gone on to become one of Marvel’s most prolific heroes. While he is blind and doesn’t have superpowers, he boasts incredible super senses that allow him to perceive the world differently.
Daredevil’s relationship history in the comics is a bit more complicated than most. He has had his fair share of one-night stands, affairs, and genuine but intricate romances. He doesn’t really have a specific type but what I can confirm is that in the comics, Daredevil is straight.
The best Daredevil girlfriends have served to further and strengthen his character. Some of his loves are hazy, while others have become fan favorites. Some were superheroes like himself, while others were just ordinary people.
As a masked vigilante and a lawyer, most of Matt Murdock’s relationships usually end tragically. This is because his job description is quite perilous. He has a long list of deceased girlfriends, which makes his love life all the more complicated. That said, some of Daredevil’s most notable love interests include:
Elektra- Matt and Elektra’s relationship has a long history in the comics. They first met in Daredevil #168 at the university and date years later. Despite being his most notable love, Elektra is also his most controversial. Daredevil has a strict no-kill rule, and the two love birds usually butt heads over this because Elektra is a lethal assassin willing to kill anyone. They have an on-again-off-again cycle which proves that despite their differences, they still care for one another.
Kirsten McDuffie- First appearing in Daredevil Vol. 3 #1, she is a District Attorney in San Francisco. She suspects that Matt Murdock and Daredevil are one and the same, a fact she jokingly tries to get him to admit. The two start dating, and she is easily one of his healthiest relationships due to her playful personality. Things between them would end after the Purple Children make everyone forget Daredevil’s secret identity.
Karen Page- In Daredevil #1, Foggy hires Karen Page, and soon after, she and Matt begin dating before finally getting engaged. The two have a tumultuous relationship, breaking up and making up occasionally, but it’s clear that they’re always destined to find each other again. They forgive each other’s mistakes and genuinely care for each other. Sadly, things don’t go well as Karen is killed by Bullseye to join the long list of deceased Daredevil lovers.
Candace Nelson- Candace is Foggy’s younger sister, whom he had been keeping a secret despite him and Murdock being close friends and confidants for years. Matt and Candace go on a couple of dates while he and her brother try to help her. Eventually, she leaves and so ends her involvement with Matt.
Black Widow- In the comics, Natasha and Matt had an incredibly close relationship as lovers and crime-fighting partners. Daredevil is so enamored by Nat that he relocates to San Francisco, showing just how much he cares for her. The two were a perfect fit for each other and would have stayed together were it not for the fact that Matt was in love with Karen.
Some of Daredevil’s other lovers include Echo, Mary Walker, Black Cat, Dakota North, Nyla Skin, Glorianna O’Breen, and others. So, his comic book history does prove the fact that Daredevil is straight. All of his love interests were women, and nowhere in comic lore was he ever involved with a man.
Daredevils’ Romantic Interests in Movies and TV Shows
Apart from the comics, over the years, Daredevil has been featured in other media, particularly movies, as well as some MCU TV series. In these on-screen adaptations, Daredevil has always been depicted as a straight character. He was involved with various women across these media, and some of his on-screen loves are recurring characters from the comics.
In the 2003 film Daredevil, Matt Murdock encounters Elektra Natchios and is intrigued by her. Despite distrusting him at first, the two ended up dating. Later on in the film, Bullseye, who’s an assassin for hire, kills Elektra’s father and implicates Daredevil. Elektra swears vengeance on Daredevil as she only saw him during the attack. When going after Bullseye, Daredevil meets Elektra, who impales him in the shoulder. Elektra takes off Daredevil’s mask only to be shocked at the sight of Matt. He would, later on, watch in horror as Bullseye killed Elektra.
In the TV series Daredevil, which kicked off in 2015, Matt Murdock had an interest in Karen Page, who is also his secretary in his law firm. The two date briefly but would break up since Karen finds Matt’s job as a vigilante too dangerous.
The TV series also introduced Elektra as Matt’s love interest in Season 2. Their relationship doesn’t last quite long because of her extremely violent nature and mercenary lifestyle. She would become the second Daredevil after Matt was incarcerated.
Another Daredevil love interest in the TV series is Claire Temple. The two had pretty intense feelings for each other, which is clear in their first kiss. She was there whenever he was injured and would help him deal with his demons. While the relationship wasn’t long-lasting, the two would remain close.
Recently, another unexpected love interest of Matt was introduced in the MCU. This is none other than Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk. Matt appears in Episode 8 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and right from the onset, we see the chemistry between them. The romantic pairing of the two is surprising since they never dated in the comics, and even though Matt leaves for New York by the end of the episode, we’re already clamoring for more scenes between them.
So, if the on-screen adaptations of Daredevil are anything to go by, he’s straight. He was only ever involved with ladies which proves his sexuality.
The Bottom Line: Is Daredevil Gay, Bisex, or Straight?
Daredevil is straight. As we have already discussed, in his almost 60-year history, he’s only ever been in relationships with ladies. In the comics, his main love interests were Elektra and Karen Page. He also had a thing with Black Widow, Black Cat, and many others. In the movies/TV series, he is also involved with various ladies, most notably Elektra, Karen Page, Claire Temple, and Jennifer Walters.
Therefore, in conclusion, by analyzing Daredevil’s love interests in the comics and on the big screen, there’s no denying the fact that he’s straight. Never was he involved with a member of the same sex.
