‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Post-Credit Scenes Explained: Will Shazam Meet His Old Nemesis Again?

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is finally hitting theaters worldwide this weekend. And while we’re waiting for the box-office result and hoping it will be good enough to ensure the return of Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as Billy Batson again in the third movie or some other upcoming DC project, we can only look at the movie’s ending and speculate what the future potentially holds for Shazam and his family.
Mid-credit and post-credit scenes are something that is regularly present in movies these days, especially if those movies are part of large cinematic universes, which Shazam certainly is. However, the situation is a bit more complicated than that. We all know how WB and DC hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to develop a new cinematic universe known as DCU, and it’s still unsure how the current DCEU, which Shazam is part of, will incorporate some of its parts into that new franchise.
It’s known that some actors will continue to play their DCEU roles in DCU, while some major roles will be recast. There’s no telling how Shazam could fit into DCU, which makes us skeptical about the potential third movie. Still, the mid-credit and post-credit scenes gave us a good tease that Shazam is actually a part of James Gunn’s plans, and now we’ll tell you why we think so.
The following paragraphs contain spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods!
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Mid-Credit Scene Explained
Following the battle with the daughters of Atlas and meeting Wonder Woman, who restored the power of the wizard’s staff, Billy Batson and the rest of his family returned to their hope, celebrating another victory and waiting for the next adventure that could potentially await for them in the potential third movie. Will that third movie happen is still unknown, but the mid-credit scene gave us a teaser that we could see Shazam again. If not in his third movie, then as a guest star in another DC project.
The scene featured Peacemaker stars Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, who played Emilia Harcourt and John Economos in The Suicide Squad spin-off series created by James Gunn and starring John Cena. The series has been officially renewed for Season 2, and it’s expected to return once DCU replaces DCEU. Harcourt and Economos arrive to meet Shazam and offer him a place on a superhero team, which Shazam immediately accepts.
However, once second after he accepted the offer, Billy realized that he was offered the place at Justice Society and not a Justice League. Billy, who doesn’t try to hide he wants to be on the same team as Wonder Woman, then asks them why there are two teams with similar goals and “Justice” in their names. As Harcourt and Economos leave, Billy suggests that Justice Society should change its name to distinguish one team from another. And one of the names he quickly came up with is “The Authority,” which may sound like a teaser for the upcoming DCU movie of the same name, which is set to be released after Superman: Legacy.
This could potentially mean that Zachary Levi’s Shazam could be a part of DCU as much as he was a part of DCEU. Of course, one second later, Billy suggested one more name; The Avengers Society, which clearly shows how they tried to make some funny reference to that other comic book house, probably the same way when Batman and Superman were mentioned in Marvel’s Eternals movie.
The trick with this mid-credit scene is that it can mean a lot and absolutely nothing simultaneously. It’s hard to say at this moment. We can only wait to see and hope there will be a place for Shazam in DCEU.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Post-Credit Scene Explained
The post-credit scene takes us back to the cell where Dr. Sivana, the villain from the original Shazam movie, is locked up. The post-credit scene of the third movie showed him at the same place where a talking caterpillar visited him and proposed some sort of evil alliance.
In Fury of the Gods, we see Sivana in the same place again, but with a much longer beard, which suggests that a lot of time has passed. The talking caterpillar arrives once again and says the plan will soon go forward, but Sivana is frustrated because it’s been two years since he was imprisoned. The caterpillar didn’t tell him anything, apart from the fact that there’s some plan which he still knows nothing about.
Sivana says it’s been two years since the caterpillar first approached him, and since he’s 57 now, he would like to realize that plan while he’s still alive. The caterpillar tells him that time is needed because a caterpillar can’t really travel fast. The caterpillar tells Sivana that everything will be ready soon, but then the caterpillar leaves, leaving Sivana even more frustrated because who knows how long it will take for the caterpillar to return and actually tell him what the plan is.
The post-credit scene featured the imprisoned Dr. Sivana, and when we first saw that scene, we thought it was a teaser for a sequel. But now, it turns out it was a teaser for another teaser in the sequel that should tease whatever happens next. You know, we’re kind of frustrated, too, because we still don’t know if this means that Shazam will meet his old nemesis again or if these post-credit scenes are actually trolling us by giving us teases for something that we may never see at the end.
What is next for Shazam?
It is impossible to know what is next not only for Shazam but his arch-nemesis as well. There were some unconfirmed reports that the third Shazam movie would bring us the fight between Shazam and Black Adam. Still, following the disappointment that Dwayne Johnson’s spin-off endured both critically and commercially, it wouldn’t be a surprise if those plans were changed.
The only thing we can do now is to wait and see if Shazam will be commercially successful because only financial success can ensure another sequel and more appearances of Shazam on the big screen in the future. The good news is that the Shazam sequel’s budget was around $125 million dollars.
Why is that good news? For comparison, the original Shazam movie cost $100 million, and the $366 million at the box office was enough to ensure a sequel. On the other hand, Black Adam’s budget was more than $200 million, and even though that movie earned more than the original Shazam, $393 million, it was still considered a disappointment. Chepear movies always have a higher chance of achieving box office success, and we hope Fury of the Gods will achieve it too.
