We finally got a date for a new Marvel Cinematic Universe project, Secret Invasion, and fans are excited. Of course, one of the more notable storylines of Marvel Comics will finally be included in the MCU and transition us to Marvels, Skrulls, and other cosmic storylines in Phase 5. Two characters will heavily feature in these projects, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, who were already “replaced” by Skrulls after Avengers: Endgame. However, with all the chaos and multiple different secret projects Nick Fury and Maria Hill participated in, Fury’s right hand had one incredibly interesting job she operated between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War – employment in Stark Industries. This article will discuss why Tony Stark fired Maria Hill from Stark Industries after the Civil War.

Tony Stark fired Maria Hill for “insubordination” after a disagreement over the reunion of Avengers post-Civil War. After the Clash of the Avengers in Germany, the threat to the future was still prominent, prompting Fury and Hill to track down Captain America and Iron Man, respectively, to reunite the Avengers again. While Captain America was open about the possibility of reuniting superheroes to prevent future threats, Maria Hill struggled to convince Stark, who was still mad about what happened a few months before. It’s also important to mention that Stark fired Hill without being sure if the Commander was still employed in Stark Industries.

We will discuss this topic more by mentioning why Maria Hill worked at Stark Industries, whereabouts after the Age of Ultron, and why Stark fired her. If you are interested, stay with us until the end.

Why did Maria Hill work at Stark Industries?

Maria Hill is a prominent character in Marvel Comics and one of the most important people for Nick Fury and the government. Her skills as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and her eventual promotion to Commander earned her a reputation that most enemies of the secret agency feared.

Marvel Comics Maria Hill is fair and a great leader, but also power-hungry and ambitious, which made her a perfect candidate for the position of power. For example, she isn’t afraid of most foes, and one time she dismissed Norman Osbourne, also known as the notorious Green Goblin. Maria Hill is a force to be reckoned with, which somewhat translates to Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Maria Hill still works for Fury, despite being employed by Stark.

Maria Hill (played by Colbie Smulders) is a tamer but still an extremely capable and determined person. Her stoicism made her legendary amongst the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and some trainees called her “a cold b****.” However, her coldness and “rules first” attitude led to S.H.I.E.L.D. being a strong agency. Director Fury noticed that and promoted her as his “right hand.”

When Nick Fury decided to start the Avengers Protocol, Maria Hill was beside him, and since then has been one of the most important parts of the Infinity Saga.

Of course, the happenings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier changed the landscape for S.H.I.E.L.D., which fell after HYDRA infiltrated the secret agency.

Stark employed Maria Hill after the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The aftermath of Natasha Romanoff leaking all S.HI.E.L.D. documents to the public made the agency non-existent. Former Director Fury and Deputy Director Hill, with Black Widow, became enemies of the state.

Essentially, Fury and Hill were supposed to end up in prison, but Maria Hill’s employment at Stark Industries guaranteed her protection from the government and aid from Tony Stark’s lawyers. Maria Hill was officially employed in Stark Industries and a member of the Human Resources department. Of course, that didn’t stop her from secretly working on global security and working for Nick Fury – even under constant security surveillance of the biggest world security agencies like the CIA and FBI.

Where was Maria Hill after the Age of Ultron?

The events of the Age of Ultron made Avengers aware that some government members wanted to fully control their activity, which led to Captain America: Civil War and disagreements among the superheroes.

Stark Industries still employed Maria Hill during that time. Still, the aftermath of the Age of Ultron brought her new responsibilities with the new Avengers Compound and working in the lab with Helen Cho.

This Avengers Headquarters is where Fury and Hill observe the conflict between the Avengers and discuss the Sokovia Accords, the biggest point of the conflict between the superheroes. However, 2018 is the year when Hill stops working for Tony Stark, but the question is why?

The possible reunion of Avengers prompted hurt Stark to fire Maria Hill

The year 2018 is when the Infinity Saga phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets to its peak and is glorious. Of course, the prelude to the biggest and most tragic event in the MCU is heavily featured during Avengers: Infinity War, where Black Order and Thanos infiltrate Earth and proceed to collect all Infinity Stones.

Iron Man fires Maria Hill from Stark Industries.

The alien threat prompts Fury and Hill to try their best to reunite the Avengers and the best fighters on Earth and outside of it (Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy), specifically Iron Man and Captain America. The leaders of the Avengers have been at odds since the Civil War, and former S.H.I.E.L.D. directors decide to go by themselves and convince the heroes to form Avengers once again.

Fury visits Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon, who give the director an option to always be open for an Avengers reunion to protect the world, but Tony Stark needs to call first.

In the special comic book Captain Marvel Prelude, Hill visits Tony Stark at the Avengers compound months after the Civil War. He is working with F.R.I.D.A.Y. on a new Iron Man suit called Mark L, which he notably used against Thanos.

Hill starts the conversation about Vision turning off his transponder once again and the difficulties of locating him. Tony is silent until the Commander mentions that they need to have a full roster of Avengers because of the imminent threat by the aliens. Iron Man dismisses her immediately and tells her she is fired from his company, following up with a question if Hill is still his employee.

We all know what happens next – the imminent threat occurs, and Cap and Iron Man reunite the Avengers and bring more allies, but it’s all in vain – Thanos does The Snap, disintegrating Fury, Hill, and other fifty percent of the universe’s population.
