When a character supposedly dies on the big screen, that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually return, especially if they’re part of some multi-billion dollar franchise that is full of characters people know, love, and always want to see even though it may not seem like we’re going to see them again. Just ask, well, almost every character that “died” in the Fast & Furious franchise. And, of course, let’s not forget the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which even managed to restore half of all life in the entire universe. Recently we watched a new official trailer for the upcoming MCU series Secret Invasion, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in June. The trailer gave us one quick shot of a gravestone with Nick Fury’s name on it. So in this article, we’ll tell you if Nick Fury ever died in the MCU and what is his current status in the franchise.

If we’re going to count fake deaths, then Nick Fury “died” for the first time in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He was seemingly murdered and buried before it was uncovered that he faked his death to escape from HYDRA, an evil organization that infiltrated SHIELD. At the end of the movie, Nick Fury tells Steve Rogers: “anybody asks for me, tell them they can find me right here,” referring to his gravestone. Four years later, Nick Fury was one of the victims when Thanos snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War. But just like everyone who died that way, he was brought back five years later when Hulk snapped his own fingers to restore half of the universe. Since then, Nick Fury has remained alive and well (we hope so), although he sent Talos to impersonate on Earth while he was away.

Nick Fury is now all set to return in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, along with Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross. What makes this upcoming series so interesting is the fact that it’s the first MCU project in which Samuel L. Jackson plays the main role after 15 years of playing a supporting character. A great supporting character, to be clear.

There’s something strange about Fury’s gravestone in the Secret Invasion trailer

Although some fans claimed we’re getting too much MCU since Phase 4 kicked off in 2021, it’s a fact that we didn’t get a new MCU series on Disney+ since She-Hulk: Attorney at Law concluded last October. The She-Hulk received generally negative reviews from the fans, although some admitted it was worth it because it brought Charlie Cox’s Daredevil back to the MCU after he had a brief cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Now, Marvel Studios has decided that next June is the right time to release the next all-new show, and the fans are excited for this one because it’s promising to be more serious, grounded, and not over-humored as some of the most recent MCU projects.

Will Marvel Studios Make More Mature Content in the Future?

Marvel Studios recently released the official trailer for Secret Invasion, and apart from the general things we’ve mentioned in our trailer breakdown, one more thing subsequently caught our eye. One shoot in the trailer showed us a gravestone with Nick Fury’s full name, and of course, we immediately thought that’s the same gravestone we saw in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Fury faked his death.

However, when you look at the gravestone from The Winter Soldier again, you can see that these gravestones aren’t the same. While there’s a chance that these are actually the same gravestones that were just made differently by the production team, this could also put some new layer of mystery into this series.

Nick Fury’s gravestone in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014, left) and Secret Invasion (2023, right)

From what we’ve seen in the trailer, Nick Fury will meet with Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth, an MI6 agent and Nick Fury’s old acquaintance from the past. We can also add that the location of this gravestone in the Secret Invasion is nowhere close to the location of his gravestone in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

While we found out plenty about Fury’s past thanks to his chats with Carol Danvers in the Captain Marvel movie, could this mean there are parts of Nick Fury’s past we still need to uncover? Did Nick Fury fake his death more than that one time in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? After all, the next shoot in the trailer picking up the gun could mean that one of the graves in this cemetery is used as the vault camouflaged as the grave.

What we like is that Marvel Studios is focusing on the characters again. The Secret Invasion series might show us more of Nick Fury in these six episodes than we have seen from him during the 15 years he spent in the MCU. Nick Fury is one of those mysterious characters who you meet only up to a certain level that you need to know about him, and we have a feeling that the level will increase highly in the series. And we’re all for it.
