The MCU fans are impatiently waiting for the third and final installment of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Six years after the release of its predecessor Vol. 2, four years after the conclusion of the Infinity saga, and less than a year since we last saw some of the Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the whole squad is back for one last adventure in which they’ll face new threats, including Adam Warlock and High Evolutionary.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which can be described as Guardians of the Galaxy: Endgame, is just around the corner. And as it usually goes when a new MCU movie is closing in, we get to see the first reactions from lucky individuals who had the honor of seeing the movie before its official premiere in theaters. From what we can see in these first reactions, it looks like we’re rightly expecting the best Guardians of the Galaxy movie and probably even the best MCU movie since Avengers: Endgame. Guardians of the Galaxy first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their standalone movie in 2014, written and directed by James Gunn. The movie achieved huge critical and commercial success, increasing the titular team’s popularity among fans unfamiliar with Marvel’s source material. The original movie’s success spawned a sequel in 2017, and the Guardians also appeared in crossover events Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Guardians of the Galaxy had a minor role in Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022, and they also had their own Holiday Special last Holiday Season. While the chance that some Guardians actors could return in future MCU projects remains, Vol. 3 is certainly James Gunn’s last Marvel movie. Gunn is currently working as the co-CEO of DC Studios, and he’s set to write and direct the upcoming movie Superman: Legacy, which will kick off an all-new cinematic universe based on DC characters — DCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars an ensemble cast featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, and Sylvester Stallone. The movie will be released in theaters worldwide on May 5, 2023.
