Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a highly expected movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the franchise will release its final movie on the 5th of May. The movie will say goodbye to James Gunn, who moved on to Warner Bros. and DC content, and even some of the Guardians of the Galaxy members will have their last appearances. This movie is incredibly important, not just for the joy it brings to fans but because it will introduce some important characters and plotlines for the future of the MCU. This article will discuss whether Star-Lord will die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and will Chris Pratt stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Star-Lord probably won’t die in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie. Yes, there have been speculations that some members will never return to MCU after GotG 3, but that probably won’t happen with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, whose character is important to the MCU. Despite being vague in interviews, Chris Pratt (like the rest of the cast) said that the doors are open and he wouldn’t mind returning to MCU. There are huge and important stories coming up in the next few years, with Secret Wars and Kang the Conqueror at the forefront, and Star-Lord’s role could be instrumental in those storylines. Also, the never-together-again aspect could be applied to the fact that this will be the last movie where we will see the original Guardians cast together.

All these rumors of GotG members dying are legitimate, but that doesn’t mean the team will depart MCU – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the last one of the franchise. We will discuss our reasoning behind Star-Lord’s faith and speculate a bit about who might “bite the dust” in this rollercoaster of movies. If you are interested, stay with us until the end.

Star-Lord’s faith in the GotG 3 is probably safe

The Infinity Saga brought us many projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the most epic ending of the superhero genre. However, that feeling was almost ruined (it was for some people) since Avengers: Endgame was heavily spoiled online just before the movie’s release, and Marvel Studios weren’t very amused, to say it lightly.

The subreddit that had heavy spoilers for the epic ending of Infinity Saga was shut down, and Kevin Feige decided to gatekeep his projects even more. Remember when you could discover who would continue their tenure in the MCU by looking at the state of actors’ contracts? Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. come to mind in this case since their characters eventually departed the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The post-Infinity Saga era is more strict in those aspects, which keeps spoilers (mostly) at bay, and the expectations of the movies aren’t ruined. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a special case since James Gunn directs his last movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and continues his career at DC and Warner Bros. studios. While James Gunn tries to reform the awful state of DCEU, some of his actors will also depart the MCU.

Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord had led the Guardians since 2014, when the first movie came out, and quickly became the fan favorite. The first movie revealed Quill’s origins, which are slightly different from the comics but still effective enough for fans to sympathize with the character. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie saw the birth of the team and family, which were instrumental for the future of Infinity Saga.

The second movie had Peter Quill at the center of the plot and his dealings with his estranged father, the Celestial named Ego, a tyrant and serial killer who only cared for his own well-being and power. His relationship with Peter Quill deteriorates when the Guardians of the Galaxy leader discovers the Celestial killed his mother and wants to use him for his agenda. Star-Lord helps Guardians kill the father he never wanted, but simultaneously, he sees the father he always had dying by sacrifice. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is traumatic for Quill, and the Snap and Thanos’ attack doesn’t help his case.

The Snap happens, billion species are erased from the universe, and Quill is indirectly responsible for it. His personal agenda prevented the Avengers and the rest of the Guardians from killing the Mad Titan, which led to an imminent apocalypse. This leads us to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, where Star-Lord becomes one of the movie’s most popular suggestions for dying.

Many media outlets speculated that Chris Pratt would leave MCU and not continue his tenure as Star-Lord. Despite the speculations and rumors being fair, the trailers and the interviews of the actors suggest that won’t be the case. Yes, GotG 3 is the last movie where we will see Guardians of the Galaxy together in action, but that doesn’t mean the character will never appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie will mark the end for James Gunn, who is already a part of Warner Bros. and DC, but other characters most certainly have an open ending. There is no way Gunn won’t leave any “seeds” for MCU to use in the future, and if the appearance of Adam Warlock means something, it is the fact that the director most certainly did leave plot devices for future storylines. In multiple interviews, the actors were quite vague in how they answered the questions about their future in the MCU, but if anyone left the doors open, it’s Chris Pratt.

At the Los Angeles world premiere of the movie, the director and the actors gave brief interviews to Hollywood Reporter, where Chris Pratt suggested that the fans could always see Star-Lord on Disney+; the question if he will continue to play the character, Pratt answered he is open to it. This statement doesn’t confirm anything but suggests that Star-Lord won’t die in GotG 3.

Star-Lord’s role in the announced Secret Wars movie has the potential to be extremely big, and because that notable comic book event revolves around a huge crossover that will bring many superheroes and villains to one place, Star-Lord, and Guardians will potentially reunite one or another.

In conclusion, Star-Lord won’t die in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movies, but the time will definitely pass until we see him again in the MCU, just because other projects are on the way. This doesn’t mean that every member of Guardians will stay alive after the credits roll in GotG 3, so let’s speculate a bit.

Which Guardians will depart MCU after GotG 3?

The official synopsis, interviews, and trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 established that Rocket would be at the center of the plot. His origin story and past will be the catalyst that will send the Guardians to the dangerous mission where some of the characters might not come out alive.

Rocket Racoon’s story will heavily feature in the movie, with High Evolutionary as the main villain and his “creator,” or tormentor. Bradley Cooper didn’t reveal much about his faith in the MCU, but if his story is as heavy as critics and reviewers suggest, Rocket Raccoon might not return after GotG 3. However, rumors were circling online that Rocket could survive and lead the Guardians team with Groot, which is fair speculation. Nevertheless, the actor and movie will determine will the fan-favorite Rocket stay in MCU.

Drax is another character that will most likely die from the rest since Dave Bautista expressed publically that he won’t return as Drax to MCU if James Gunn isn’t a project director. Moreover, Bautista also insinuated that he wants to portray “much more serious roles in serious movies,” if Glass Onion, Dune, and Knock at the Cabin movies suggest something, it’s his willingness to become a proper actor.

Of course, these are all speculations, and we won’t know for sure until the movie becomes available worldwide, but it’s always interesting to guess before huge projects. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters worldwide on the 5th of May, and we cannot wait to see the last journey of Guardians together.
