With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now playing in theaters, the superhero genre fans are already looking forward to James Gunn’s next project. Gunn confirmed that he won’t make any more movies for Marvel Studios since he’s working now full-time as the creative director of DCU, the upcoming shared universe which will replace soon-to-end DCEU.
Last year, James Gunn was hired as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, and their task was to create an all-new cinematic universe based on DC characters from the ground up. Last February, Gunn announced that DCU would officially kick off in July 2025 with Superman: Legacy, the newest Superman reboot that Gunn will write and direct. Although that created an outrage among Snyderverse fans, some fans say it would be interesting to see Gunn’s vision for DCU, especially after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
At least one of GotG Vol. 3 actors will appear in Superman: Legacy!
During a recent Q&A session on his Twitter account, Gunn was asked by one of his followers if any of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast members would work with him again on Superman: Legacy, and Gunn shortly answered: Yes!
It’s known that some directors like to work with more or less the same actors on multiple projects due to their good working experience. Gunn is certainly no different. Chukwudi Iwuji, who starred in Gunn’s TV series Peacemaker, played the High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while Daniela Melchior starred in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, also had a minor role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Also, one thing that cannot be denied is that Sean Gunn, James’ brother, and Jennifer Holland, James’ wife, are also present in almost all of his recent projects. Sean played Kraglin in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, as well as Weasel and Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad, while Jennifer Holland starred in the Peacemaker series as Emilia Harcourt and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Kwol.
Who will play the next Superman in the upcoming reboot is still unknown. The only thing known for now is that Gunn wants a younger actor, which is why he didn’t want Henry Cavill in his movie, and Gunn previously teased that he has a shortlist of actors with whom he’ll do an audition soon. It is expected that a new Superman actor will be revealed this Summer.
Gunn recently turned in the first draft of the script for Superman: Legacy. The movie’s development will not be affected by the ongoing WGA strike. Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to be released on July 11, 2025.
