James Gunn finished all of his work with Marvel Studios earlier when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally opened in theaters and gathered positive reviews from critics and audiences. Now, James Gunn is focusing on his next movie — Superman: Legacy — on which he serves as the writer and director.
Gunn recently confirmed that filming is set to start in January next year, and while the project’s development is in full motion, there’s still no word about the movie’s cast. Who will be the next Superman? Who will be the next Lois Lane? Who will be the next Lex Luthor? We have no idea.
First potential actors for Superman: Legacy may have been revealed!
But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we got a list of names that is reportedly in final talks for the roles in James Gunn’s upcoming movie. It is expected that the official cast will be revealed this summer, and by then, we can only look at these potential names and say what we think about this casting.
According to the mentioned report, David Corenswet (Pearl) is the top candidate for the next Clark Kent. The report says he should do a screen test this month or early June. Jacob Elordi (The Kissing Booth, Euphoria) is also mentioned, although the report says he never submitted for the audition. Tom Brittney and Andrew Richardson are also candidates for the title role.
The same reports mentioned four potential actresses for the role of Lois Lane. Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Barbie), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Samara Weaving (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Scream VI).
Ultimately, Nicholas Hoult, who is best known for the role of young Hank McCoy, aka Beast, in Fox’s X-Men franchise and the role of Nux in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, is the top candidate for the role of Superman’s notorious enemy — Lex Luthor. This isn’t the first time Hoult has been rumored for a DC role. Let’s remember that he was the second top candidate after Robert Pattinson for the role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. He didn’t get to play Caped Crusader, but he might be lucky with the bald villain.
Superman: Legacy will be the first movie set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. This all-new cinematic universe serves as the soft reboot of DCEU that started in 2013 and will conclude this December with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While Superman: Legacy is the first movie, the first DCU project, in general, will be an animated series Creature Commandos, written by Gunn, which will premiere on Max next year.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to be released on July 11, 2025.
