Marvel Studios has always been known for hiring mostly unknown directors and then making a name out of them with their MCU projects. Let’s be honest; how many of us knew about James Gunn before he directed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ or Jon Watts before he directed ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’? But also, once a director gets a chance to work on an MCU project, Marvel Studios likes to keep directors who show good directing skills. Russo brothers directed four MCU movies, James Gunn three, Peyton Reed three, and Jon Watts three.
Sam Raimi directed only one MCU movie, but he directed it with plenty of experience, considering that the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire is still one of the most notable works in his career. Although Raimi wasn’t pleased with studio interferences during the development of ‘Spider-Man 3’, which is why he ultimately quit the franchise when ‘Spider-Man 4’ was already announced, and the project was canceled as well. Still, Raimi returned to directing Marvel movies with ‘Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness’ after he replaced the original director Scott Derrickson.
Sam Raimi may not be done with the MCU yet!
‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ was the second-most successful MCU movie set in the Multiverse Saga, behind ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ The movie grossed $955.8 million, making it the highest-grossing movie of Raimi’s career. We know that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will eventually return, but so could Sam Raimi as well.
According to the known insider Jeff Sneider, Marvel Studios is reportedly considering several known MCU directors for the upcoming movie ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ According to the insider, some of the considered directors are Ryan Coogler (who directed two ‘Black Panther’ movies), Jon Watts (who directed the ‘Spider-Man’ MCU trilogy, although he abandoned the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot he was initially set to direct), and Sam Raimi, who is one of the most experienced Marvel directors. Sneider also mentioned Jon Favreau, director of the first two ‘Iron Man’ movies, but he’s currently too busy with his work at Star Wars.
According to some previous reports, Marvel Studios also wants Sam Raimi to direct the third ‘Doctor Strange’ movie, which still has no official date. Although judging by Marvel’s release calendar, it seems that its release date could be set really close to ‘Secret Wars’, meaning that Raimi probably wouldn’t be able to direct both of those movies. Still, Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and already signed to direct its sequel, has been confirmed to direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ so Marvel probably has a plan for how to organize directors they hire for multiple projects.
One thing we can say with 99& of certainty; ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will be directed by someone who has already worked on an MCU movie before. Marvel Studios usually hires new directors on solo projects, and then, according to their success, they give them large crossover movies. Russo brothers started with ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ in 2014, and they concluded their MCU path with two ‘Captain America’ and two ‘Avengers’ movies with their names on them.
‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ received positive reviews from critics, although the writing received some criticism. Still, Raimi’s direction and the unique directing style he imbued into this movie were praised. Do you think Sam Raimi would be a good choice to direct ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ or do you think that even his return for Doctor Strange 3 is a bad idea? Let us know in the comments.
