One of the greatest things about signing up for a Disney+ account is the ability to watch nearly every movie released so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, one of the notable exceptions is the absence of Spider-Man: Far From Home, one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
Spider-Man: Far From Home, the majorly beloved sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, is a thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, fans of the web-slinging superhero may have noticed that the film is not available on Disney+, the popular streaming platform owned by The Walt Disney Company.
This absence has raised questions and sparked discussions among fans worldwide. While the exact reason for Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s exclusion from Disney+ remains undisclosed, several factors could potentially explain its absence.
One crucial factor contributing to Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s unavailability on Disney+ is the complex web of licensing agreements surrounding the character.
Although Spider-Man is a Marvel Comics creation, the film rights to the character are owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. This means that Sony has the final say on how and where Spider-Man movies are distributed. While Sony and Marvel Studios have worked out a deal to co-produce the Spider-Man films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the distribution rights are still firmly in Sony’s hands.
Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019 further complicates the situation. As part of the deal, Disney acquired the film rights to several Marvel characters that were previously held by Fox, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
However, the deal did not include the film rights to Spider-Man. Consequently, Disney does not have complete control over Spider-Man’s distribution, and Sony retains the ability to license the film to other platforms or distribute it on its own streaming services, such as Sony’s Crackle or future endeavors.
Another factor to consider is the timing of the release. Spider-Man: Far From Home hit theaters in July 2019, shortly before Disney+ launched in November of the same year. At the time, Sony likely had already secured licensing deals with other streaming platforms. It is not uncommon for films to have pre-existing licensing agreements in place, preventing them from being available on new streaming services immediately after their theatrical release.
It is also worth noting that licensing agreements can be complex and may involve negotiations between multiple parties. The specifics of these agreements are often kept confidential, making it challenging to discern the exact reasons behind certain distribution decisions. The exclusion of Spider-Man: Far From Home from Disney+ could be a result of intricate negotiations between Sony, Marvel Studios, and Disney.
However, it is essential to remember that the landscape of streaming platforms is constantly evolving. Licensing agreements can be re-negotiated, or new deals struck, which means that the availability of films can change over time. Disney and Sony have demonstrated a willingness to collaborate in the past, as seen in their co-production of Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequel. Given the popularity of Spider-Man and the potential demand from fans, it is possible that the film may become available on Disney+ in the future, either through a revised agreement or as part of a broader deal between the two studios.
If you are a massive fan of the film and are hoping to get your hands on a copy of it digitally, your best bet is to simply obtain a digital code for it somewhere online. However, if you would prefer to have a physical copy of the sophomore Spider-Man feature, you can also find Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film on websites such as Amazon.
