Best quotes from ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ movie
1. Miles Morales: “I love chai tea.” Spider-Man India: “What did you just say?! Chai tea?! Chai means ‘tea,’ bro! You are saying ‘tea tea!’ Would I ask you for a ‘coffee coffee’ with room for ‘cream cream’?”
Let’s start with the hilarious quote from Pavitr Prabhakar, officially known in the superhero world as Spider-Man India from Earth-50101, when Miles joins Gwen on her “trip” to an alternate version of Mumbai, where the Spot travels to acquire more powers from that world’s Alchamax facility.
The introduction of the movie’s character is colorful, and the portrayal of Indian culture is a bit over the top but extremely cool. In the introduction scene, when Miles and the gang meet Pavitr, Miles suggests that he loves ‘chai tea.’ Of course, Spider-Man India is frustrated with the young Spider-Man calling the Indian famous beverage that since the whole (or most of it) called the warm dring exactly like that.
The scene makes fun of the Western World and its interpretation of Asian culture, and Spider-Man India calls out Miles and the audience at the same time – tea is tea; you don’t have to add chai as well.
2. Spider-Man India: “Don’t ‘Eat Pray Love’ me, bro.”
Spider-Man India calls out a lot of Western points of view regarding his culture and this famous memoir by the American writer Elizabeth Gilbert.
The original memoir book was released in 2006. The author chronicles her trip around the world after her divorce and the things she discovers along the way. On her world tour, Gilbert spends three months in India, where she found her ‘spirituality.’ Of course, most of the Western World regards India as the ‘spiritual’ space where they can find peace. The book adaptation was imminent, and Hollywood made a movie of the same name starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem.
The movie got famous with middle-aged women trying to find themselves, and Spider-Man India is tired of ‘spirituality’ and ‘calmness,’ and frankly, his world was almost torn apart by the Spot.
I must admit; I chuckled a bit in the theater when Spider-Man India quoted this.
3. Miguel O’Hara: “Don’t get me started on Dr. Strange and that nerd stuck on Earth-199999!”
Look, who doesn’t love references to other universes and Marvel projects? We all know that Sony and Marvel Studios don’t share their universes’ but this moment unlocked so many possibilities for MCU and Sonyverse in the future. We saw the infamous Venom clip of his being in the MCU, but Spider-Man 2099‘s despair after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is extremely funny and so cool.
Now, the Earth-199999 thing is what really confused the fans since Kevin Feige now insists on calling MCU Earth-616, and frankly, I’m still confused. Kevin Feige, what is it? Earth-199999 or Earth-616? Miguel O’Hara maybe knows more than most of us.
4. Gwen Stacy: “Let’s do things differently this time. So differently. His name is Miles Morales. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, and he’s not the only one. He hasn’t always had it easy, and he’s not the only one. Now he’s on his own, and he’s not the only one. You think you know the rest. You don’t. And I knew the rest, but I didn’t. I didn’t wanna hurt him, but I did. And… he’s not the only one.”
I had to include the whole quote since it is the opening line of the whole movie. In ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ we saw Miles introducing himself to the audience in the short monologue, but when Gwen started speaking instead of Miles, I was surprised.
Of course, this monologue foreshadowed almost the whole plot of the movie, and it set the tone for how the sequel will tell us the story of Miles’ journey as Spider-Man. Moreover, this quote introduced us to Gwen Stacy as another main character, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ it was such a cool intro to the movie.
Gwen Stacy is a major character in Miles Morales’ story in the comics, and this moment and the rest of the movie showcased her importance as the Earth-65’s version of Spider-Man.
5. Gwen Stacy: “In every other universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man. And in every other universe, it doesn’t end well.”
This was a very heartfelt moment between Gwen and Miles since they obviously shared their feelings for one another. Especially Miles, whose crush was seen in the first movie.
It is true – Gwen Stacy mostly ends up with Spider-Man, well, Peter Parker, to be exact, but Gwen from Earth-65 and Miles Morales from Earth-1610/616 end up together in the possible future timeline, specifically on Earth-8. They end up together and have two children.
Teenagers actually start dating, but their relationship is over since they are from different universes. Miles and Gwen from the movie really like each other, and it seems those circumstances will once again be in the way of their feelings. Or will they?
6. Hobie Brown: “I don’t believe in teams.” Miles: “Aren’t you in the band?” Hobie: “I don’t believe in consistency.” Miles: “Oh, this guy’s killing me.”
Hobie Brown, known as Spider-Punk, was introduced as the new character in ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ and his character was a pleasant surprise. I’m not a fan of stereotypical characters in this form, but Spider-Punk was extremely funny and cool.
Daniel Kaluuya’s “essexness” gave a punk version of the Spider-Man character, and in the end, he had a huge role in the movie, so kudos to the writers for that. The punk movement originates from 1970s England, and this was a perfect role and portrayal for Daniel Kaluuya.
7. The Spot: “I made you into a hero; you made me into this.”
Let’s fall back to more serious quotes from this movie since the Spot was really scary and dangerous villain. At first, mocked by Miles Morales and other Spider-Men, as another “villain of the week,” the esteemed scientist, dr. Ohnn becomes the main danger to the whole Multiverse.
Of course, when we discover that Miles was never supposed to become Spider-Man (at least in movie’s terms), Spot’s character becomes even scary. His goofiness at the beginning is replaced by danger and threat, which makes him such a compelling character in the movie.
8. Rio Morales: “Wherever you go from here, you have to promise to take care of that little boy for me. Make sure he never forgets where he came from. And he never doubts that he’s loved. And he always helps everyone. And that he belongs there.” Miles: “I promise. Rio: “Now go.”
This was such a good and emotional moment in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ especially coming from a wholesome mother like Rio Morales. In the first movie, we meet Rio and Jefferson, Miles’ parents, perfect examples of great and supportive parents.
We learn that Miles is one of the rare instances in the superhero genre who actually has a healthy relationship with his parents and family life that doesn’t mark him as “tragic” and “vulnerable.” In the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ movie, we see Miles not telling his parents that he has a secret superhero life.
Of course, that fact makes him distanced from his parents, who only want to help their son. When Rio meets Gwen and Miles after Jefferson’s party, Rio sees something wrong with her son and offers him great advice.
9. George Stacy: “… because I quit halfway through your big speech.” Gwen Stacy: “You’re… Wait a minute you’re not-you’re not gonna be Captain? Then that means…” George Stacy: “My job… being Captain. This whole thing doesn’t matter anymore. You’re the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Another cool moment between the child and the parent is between Gwen and her father, George Stacy. This happens after we discover that Miles is essentially an anomaly and has to watch his father die as part of the canon event to ensure the multiverse is intact. However, when George Stacy quits the police force for his daughter, we learn that Miles can save his father without destroying the multiverse.
One of the best moments of the movie.
10. Hobie Brown: “Taking a crap in the establishment, I salute you.”
Spider-Punk once again brings us hilarious quotes. Hobie had a few more of these one-liners in the movie, but this one made a whole theater chuckle. His punk life is more than a phase.
11. Peter B. Parker: (to Miguel) “You know you’re the only Spider-Man that isn’t funny? We’re supposed to be funny.”
Peter B. Parker has become a fan favorite in the first Spider-Verse movie, and the sequel only reminded us why he’s such a good character.
Of course, he also pokes fun at grumpy O’Hara in the movie, and this was one of the quotes criticizing his seriousness – we also know that Spider-Men are usually funny in the comics. Miguel, smile a bit; it won’t hurt you.
12. Charlotte Weber (Sun-Spider): Do you think we often use comedy as a crutch? Get it? Crutch?”
We learned that there are countless versions of Spider-Men, and the handicapped Sun-Spider is one of them. In the comics, Charlotte has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which put her in a wheelchair from her youth. When she gets bitten by the radioactive spider, Charlotte develops superpowers, which allow her to move more fluidly but don’t fully erase her disease, hence why she still uses her crutches.
Sun-Spider is a cool character, and this joke propelled her cameo in the ‘Across the Spider-Verse.’
13. Miguel O’Hara: “All stations! Stop what you’re doing and stop Spider-Man!” Spider-Men: (all pointing at each other) “You? No, wait. Me. You…”
Look, the Spider-Men pointing meme has been part of the Internet culture for years, and it originates from the Spider-Man cartoon from 1967, where that version of the Web-Slinger encounters a villain who impersonates others. Of course, he impersonates Spider-Man, which was aggressively named in the last decade or so.
Some fans want to put this meme to bed, but I liked it in the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ since it showcased almost 280 versions of Spider-Men in the movie.
14. Miguel O’Hara: “Miles, being Spider-Man is a sacrifice. That’s the job”
Miguel had a few impactful quotes, like the one when he tells Miles he is the original anomaly, but this one puts a lot of things in perspective for Miles. The teenager struggles to become the superhero he wants to be, but Spider-Man 2099 insists that Miles needs to sacrifice everything to become the protector of his world.
Of course, O’Hara says that from his own experience, which isn’t the definite fate, and both Gwen and Miles showcase that by the end of the movie. Sometimes you should sacrifice everything for the bigger goal, but everyone needs to do it.
15. Miles Morales: “Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah. I’m-a do my own thing.”
Miles Morales’ story in the first Spider-Verse movie tells us a story of a teenager reluctantly becoming Spider-Man. The sequel sees Miles trying his best to become the protector New York needs, but his private life suffers, and he needs to find himself in the chaos of the world.
After Miguel O’Hara reveals that Miles wasn’t supposed to become Spider-Man and that his radioactive spider came from another universe (Earth-42), Miles decides he doesn’t have to sacrifice his family to become the best he can be and that he will do things his way, not follow the life path of other Spider-Men.
A truly great quote that made the movie so much better for me.
