Be it in Marvel Comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the two most polarizing, chaotic characters must be Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and Loki, the God of Mischief. They graced the same comic book pages numerous times but didn’t have many encounters in the MCU. So, why is the Internet raving about their ‘relationship’? Are Loki and Scarlet Witch together?

While we can’t say for sure without further information, it seems as if Scarlet Witch and Loki might be heading into a relationship – or an affair, at least – in ‘Scarlet Witch’ #8, coming out in September 2023. They are embraced on the cover, almost locking lips, ‘falling under each other’s spell.’

Now, Marvel is quite known to tease their fans and readers with such ambiguous covers – especially when you add the description they used when announcing the issue. Therefore, it might just be a hook for the readers, but the two never actually end up together. However, the pair might have a bigger connection than we thought in the MCU. Here’s how.

Loki and Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics

Loki and Scarlet Witch are both considered ‘classic’ Marvel characters, seeing that they both appeared for the first time decades ago. The Golden Age Loki has been around since 1949, whereas Scarlet Witch appeared in ‘The X-Men’ #4 in 1969.

They are both pretty much the same characters as they are in the MCU, barring some changes in their origins and back story. That being said, Loki is a God of Mischief, and Wanda Maximoff is an enhanced mutant that eventually became the Scarlet Witch after interacting with the Darkhold.

Seeing that Scarlet Witch uses chaos magic and is known to ‘explode’ with universe-altering power while Loki is the God of Mischief – the most cunning, conniving, twisty character in Marvel Comics – it’s obvious how such a pairing could be destructive.

So far in the comics, Loki and Scarlet Witch have crossed paths several times but hardly ever had one-on-one interactions. Therefore, they had never been in anything close to a relationship before.

That’s all about to change – or so it seems – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Loki and Scarlet Witch in the MCU

Loki Laufeyson, the God of Mischief, the Prince of Asgard, and the brother of Thor, the God of Thunder, was the main antagonist of the first Avengers movie. Thanos had given him the Scepter containing the Mind Stone, along with an army of the alien Chitauri to invade Earth.

Later, however, Loki went through a major character arc through a couple of Thor movies, Avengers, and his own TV Series, Loki, and became more of a hero than a villain – well, antihero, at least.

The reason why the duo hadn’t met each other much in the MCU is that Wanda Maximoff and her brother Pietro appeared as secondary antagonists in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ Ultron used them until they switched sides and helped the Avengers stop the super-powerful android. Wanda survived and slowly became a member of the Avengers, whereas Pietro, aka Quicksilver, was shot dead.

Now, Wanda went through phases in her MCU tenure several times, appearing as a villain, then a hero, then a villain of her own story in ‘WandaVision,’ to get to a point where she redeems herself, just to fall under and becomes an antagonist in ‘Doctor Strange 2‘ again. Phew, that was a mouthful.

Through all those ups and downs, their timelines somehow never crossed each other, and they were kept at bay. Or so we thought until an interesting fan theory popped up online fairly recently. I’m getting ahead of myself again – don’t worry, I’m getting to it.

Perhaps it is for the best – pairing someone as cunning and, well, mischievous as Loki with someone as chaotic and insanely powerful as Scarlet Witch might just prove to be too much for the multiverse that’s already seemingly hanging by a thread on the brink of collapse.

Are Loki and Scarlet Witch together in the comics?

As I’ve mentioned, Loki and Scarlet Witch were never in a relationship in the comics so far – not even anything remotely close to it, for that matter. However, that could all change in September 2023, when ‘Scarlet Witch’ #8 drops.

Marvel announced the release of the issue on Twitter and shared a rather interesting cover art for the issue. We can see Loki and Scarlet Witch embracing each other, almost locking lips while looking at each other romantically in the eyes.

It could just be that both of them are playing a trick on each other and that the seeming affection isn’t actually real. That’s kind of corroborated with the text that they’ve shared with the art:

“God vs. Witch! ✨ This September, Wanda and Loki fall under each other’s spell as mischief and chaos collide in ‘Scarlet Witch’ #8.”

Obviously, everything is written ambiguously with a reason, not wanting to give anything away about the issue itself. There are, however, several interesting notes to take from what was written.

First of all, they said, ‘God Vs. Witch’, not ‘God & Witch’ or ‘God + Witch,’ indicating that there will be a conflict rather than a relationship. They also said that ‘mischief and chaos collide’ – which could mean both that they are colliding as rivals or as lovers.

Finally, it’s said they ‘fall under each other’s spell’ – is that speel actual love, or are they both trying to play the other?

We won’t know for sure until the issue comes out, but it certainly has us wondering and eagerly awaiting the issue. If the couple actually ends up together, it could potentially be the most chaotic, destructive pairing in the history of Marvel Comics.

Are Loki and Scarlet Witch in a relationship in the MCU?

Of course, Loki and Scarlet Witch aren’t in a romantic relationship in the MCU – they likely hardly know who the other one is. However, there is a certain relationship between them – or at least the events they went through in the first seasons of their shows, ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Loki,’ respectively.

According to an interesting fan post on Reddit, you can actually synchronize the final episodes of WandaVision and Loki Season 1. If you do so, you’ll see a rather peculiar ‘coincidence,’ if one can even call it a coincidence.

Is Loki Gay, Bisexual or Straight?

At around the 27-minute mark of the ‘WandaVision’ finale, Wanda fully embraces the powers of the Darkhold and becomes the Scarlet Witch. Just as she defeats Agatha Harkness and raises her unfathomable power, He Who Remains in the ‘Loki’ Season Finale crosses the ‘threshold’ – the point in time where he has no insight into the future and doesn’t know what happens next.

There’s a clip that synchronizes the shows that’ll give you a better understanding of what I’m talking about.

Could that mean that Scarlet Witch’s chaos magic grew so strong that it made the entire multiverse too chaotic to be predictable – hence, He who Remains didn’t know what was coming next anymore? It’s a stretch, but it seems plausible, as fans believe it would be too much of a coincidence for it not to be the case.

I’m not sure what to think, so I’ll let you guys decide if perhaps Wanda’s rise of power is responsible for the insane unpredictability of the multiverse – so much so that not even He Who Remains could know what’s coming next.
