So much uncertainty has been plaguing the second season of MCU’s ‘Loki‘ on Disney+ – the first MCU show that’ll get a second season. After several postponements, though, we finally got a release date (October 6, 2023), and now, we got the first official synopsis for the series.
And, although it doesn’t actually reveal too many plot details, it does give us an idea of the direction in which the show is heading. Piece that together with what we already knew from Season 1 and other MCU projects since, and you get a nice picture of what to expect for ‘Loki’ Season 2. Let’s dive right in.
‘Loki’ Season 2 first official synopsis
The first official synopsis for Loki was published by The Direct after receiving it from Marvel Studios via Disney. They also shared it on Twitter, as you can see below.
In its entirety, the official plot synopsis suggests:
“Loki’ Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority.
Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.”
Now, as you can see, we didn’t get too many details about the plot itself, but there are several interesting pieces of information to break down. You know it – we’ll do just that.
What to expect from ‘Loki’ Season 2?
First, let’s go over what we already know. Season 1 ended with He Who Remains – the Kang variant who created the TVA and the Sacred Timeline – got killed by Sylvie, who then disappeared and left the multiverse collapsing, and all those Kang variants coming in to launch another multiversal war.
Meanwhile, Loki returns to the TVA and finds Mobius, trying to explain to him what had just happened, only to realize that he’s in another universe, where this variant of Mobius has no idea who Loki even is.
We saw the Multiverse opening up in several other MCU projects since, such as ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ etc.
The last film we mentioned (‘Ant-Man 3’) featured a post-credits scene where Mobius and Loki are together, watching a lecture from Victor Timely – one of the most intelligent and most dangerous Kang variants.
That means that Loki managed to convince the new Mobius variant that he was telling the truth and that they were on a journey to find the Kang variants in an attempt to save the Multiverse.
Now, we learned some new stuff from the official synopsis of the show’s second season. We know that Hunter B-15 will return to help Loki and Mobius once again, as a variant of her did in Season 1. They’ll also be joined by some new and some returning characters, meaning we’ll basically see a new misfit team trying to save billions of lives.
The team will search not only for Kang variants but also Sylvie, as well as Miss Minutes and Judge Renslayer, who went missing within the Multiverse after the collapse of the Sacred Timeline. Will we finally get the answers about who – or what – Miss Minutes is? You bet we will.
Finally, one shouldn’t disregard that part of the synopsis mentioning ‘the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.’ Keep in mind, Disney recently released new Loki merchandise, all referring to a ‘glorious purpose’ of Loki in a very vivid, almost psychedelic colorful manner.
It was never confirmed that the merchandise reflects the show’s second season – only that it was ‘inspired by’ the show. Hence, you can interpret this however you want and take everything I say next with a huge grain of salt, as I’m honestly just speculating here.
Perhaps Loki will finally find his ‘glorious purpose’ in the show’s second season. Perhaps his glorious purpose is to save the multiverse, perhaps at the cost of his own life.
I mean, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume, seeing that Loki is the MCU character who, by far, died the most times so far. I only hope it won’t be final this time, as I’m sure we’d all love to see Tom Hiddlestone return as the God of Mischief – or Master of Mischief, as the new merch suggests – again and again.
With all the uncertainty around the show due to several factors – including Jonathan Majors’ status in the MCU – we’re happy that everything is set for our favorite anti-hero’s return. I couldn’t be more excited!
