Judging by commercial results of the last few DCEU movies, many fans have already given up on that franchise, and they’re now waiting for the reboot that will kick off in July 2025 with James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy.’ However, Warner Bros. and DC Studios still have two more DCEU movies left to release, and we can only wait and see how those will do at the box office worldwide, regardless of their critical response.
The next DCEU movie is ‘Blue Beetle,’ and although Gunn said that the movie’s titular character is actually the first DCU hero, it remains to be seen how interested the audience is going to be. And after that, Jason Momoa will finally have his next, hopefully not the last, adventure as the Aquaman in the anticipated sequel ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’
A lot from this movie is expected since the first ‘Aquaman’ movie is still the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. And while we’re not expecting the sequel will earn as much, the huge success of the original movie could help the sequel a bit.
Amber Heard talks about the ‘Aquaman’ sequel!
‘Aquaman’ star Amber Heard first joined DC Extended Universe in 2017’s ‘Justice League,’ and she reprised the role in 2018’s ‘Aquaman’ and 2021’s ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ Last year she and her ex-husband filled many front pages of tabloids due to the infamous “Depp v. Heard” trial that also divided their fans. There was even a petition to remove Heard from the ‘Aquaman’ sequel.
Even though Depp lost his roles in Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and WB’s ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ Heard has kept her role of Mera in DCEU. And as the movie is closing in, she expresses her excitement for the upcoming sequel. In a recent interview with Deadline, Heard said that the best luck for her as an actress is to balance both indie movies, like her most recent movie ‘In the Fire’ and big blockbusters, such as ‘Aquaman.’
The best luck you can have as an actor is to be able to balance both [big franchise movies and small indie movies]. Aquaman, that franchise and the machinery behind it, I’m very honored, honored to be a part of that. And then there are these small passion projects like In The Fire, where I’m proud to have gotten to know the filmmaker and the cast, and we got dirty together to breathe life into this story. There’s something cool about that, and I think success is an actor who is able to have both those things.

The original ‘Aquaman,’ directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa in the titular role, was released in December 2018. The movie grossed $1.148 billion worldwide. The sequel was originally set to be released in December 2022, but it was delayed to avoid competition with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ However, this December will also be interesting for the box office since another WB movie ‘Wonka,’ starring Timothée Chalamet, is set to be released five days ahead of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’
‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will see the return of Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman in their respective roles. The movie is directed by James Wan and will be released on December 20, 2023.
