We know that Ahsoka Tano has always been the sum total of all the different people she worked with and the experiences she gained along the way. Her experiences shaped her views, which was why she became a unique Force wielder in her own right, as she wasn’t a Jedi in name but in deed. One of the best moments that Ahsoka had was in season 7 of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ wherein she was able to help Rex with the guidance of the Force while saying a familiar quote. So, what did Ahsoka mean when she said, “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me?”
Ahsoka meant by “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me” that she still believed in the Force as a guiding hand for everyone in the galaxy even though she no longer believed in what the Jedi Order stood for. It was her own way of showing that she still trusted the Force despite her experiences.
One of the best things about Ahsoka Tano is that she is often considered the person Jedi should have been. Of course, Ahsoka was only able to become who she was due to the different experiences that she had along the way. Her experiences shaped her into someone who has lost faith in the Jedi Order but never in what the Force stood for. That said, let’s look at this quote in greater detail.
Ahsoka wasn’t the first to say this quote
Even though fans of ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’ loved the fact that Ahsoka Tano said, “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me,” fans of the entire Star Wars storyline would know that she wasn’t the first to say that line in terms of real-world chronology. This line was borrowed from the 2017 ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ movie. And it was a key quote that fans loved due to its symbolism.
In ‘Rogue One,’ the quote was often used by Chirrut Îmwe, who was a member of the Guardian of the Whills, who were the ones that protected the Kyber crystal temple of Jedha. Chirrut was a blind monk that was skilled in martial arts.
He wasn’t even sensitive to the Force. But while he didn’t have Force abilities, Chirrut trusted in the Force and was willing to bet his life on the will of the Force, considering that the Guardians of the Whills were known to be very religious people that believed in the Force but weren’t necessarily sensitive to the Force.
Throughout the movie, Chirrut often reinforced his belief in the Force by saying, “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me.” In most cases that he said this line, he did so while he was in the middle of a tough situation as he basically allowed the Force to dictate what would happen to him next. His best friend, Baze Malbus, was also a Guardian of the Whills but had lost faith in the Force.
The two of them were able to showcase their faith in the Force in the final moments of ‘Rogue One’ when they faced down a group of Imperial soldiers even though the odds were against them. While they fared well against the Imperials, they ultimately lost their lives in a worthy sacrifice that allowed them to help save the galaxy from the wrath of the Death Star.
Before ‘Rogue One,’ it was widely believed that this saying was exclusive to Chirrut or the Guardians of the Whills. However, we saw in season 7 of ‘The Clone Wars’ that Ahsoka Tano also said the same phrase when she was trying to look for the inhibitor chip stored in Captain Rex’s mind during the height of Order 66. She wanted to remove this chip from Rex’s brain to have an ally to help her survive Order 66. And without any special tools to help her find the chip’s location, she basically relied on the Force to help her.
In a way, there’s a good chance that this was all coincidental. But there’s also a good chance that Ahsoka may have come across the Guardians of the Whills during her travels. Or it is also possible that this used to be a famous saying among the Jedi and that the Guardians of the Whills merely adopted it.
And we know that the Guardians are strong believers in the Force even though not all of them are sensitive to the Force or were even trained to wield the powers of the Force.
But we know this quote holds a significant meaning in both the Jedi and the Guardians of the Whills because they rely on the Force. While we’ve never heard the Jedi saying that line before Ahsoka did, it was a reminder that the Jedi were supposed to trust the Force in all their decisions. Of course, if the Jedi had never used that line their whole lives, Ahsoka Tano might have encountered this line during her travels after leaving the Jedi Order.
Ahsoka trusts in the Force but not in the Jedi
As mentioned, the only Jedi to ever use the phrase “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me.” She relied on the power of the Force to locate the inhibitor chip in Rex’s brain so that she could help him regain his senses and control over his actions during Order 66. And this quote holds a significant meaning in Ahsoka’s character.
We know that Ahsoka left the Jedi Order of her own free will after she lost faith in the Jedi Council when they were more willing to listen to the politics behind her trial instead of trusting in her and the Force. Ahsoka felt hurt and betrayed when the leaders of the Jedi Order weren’t even willing to hear her side on the matter involving the bombing of the Jedi Temple.
In that regard, Ahsoka was no longer a Jedi and wasn’t even knighted as a Jedi. But the best part about her was that she never lost faith in the Force. Even after leaving the Jedi Order, Ahsoka still maintained her trust in the Force, as she allowed the Force to guide her in that scene with Captain Rex.
This bolsters that Ahsoka may have lost faith in the Jedi Order but not in the Force. Remember that the Jedi Order didn’t represent the entirety of the light side of the Force, especially when you look at the fact that the Jedi Order was flawed during the events of the Clone Wars.
So, even though she was no longer a Jedi, Ahsoka still had the right to trust in the will of the Force because that was what the Jedi were supposed to do before the Jedi Order was diminished into soldiers for the Republic and bureaucrats that were more interested in the political side of running the Republic instead of what the Jedi Order was supposed to stand for.
As such, when Ahsoka said, “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me,” she reaffirmed her trust in the will of the Force even though she no longer trusted the Jedi Order itself. And that is why she is often seen as someone who represented what a Jedi should have been, even though she wasn’t even a Jedi then.
