Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic and powerful superheroes in DC history. Even though her origin story changed numerous times, she always remained pretty much a powerhouse packing enough power to face the likes of Superman, Darkseid, and other powerful characters. As Wonder Woman’s power level fluctuated, so did her durability and other aspects. This is why we set out to explore one particular Wonder Woman’s weakness, so let’s check whether Wonder Woman is bulletproof both in the comics and in the movies.

Wonder Woman is not bulletproof in the comics, and she is not bulletproof in the movies. Despite her highly advanced physiology and her considerable immunity to various types of damage, she can still be harmed by bullets and other sharp weapons like swords. Those types of attacks might not kill her, but it’s enough to serious injury her. Wonder Woman was always able to tank blunt attacks more successfully than attacks with bullets, swords, and other weapons with sharp edges. Wonder Woman most often deflects bullets by using her bracelets.

Now that we’ve covered the extent of Wonder Woman’s durability, it’s time to explore it in more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!

Why is Wonder Woman so durable?

The secret to Wonder Woman’s durability lies in her origin and stems from multiple reasons. First, Wonder Woman is Amazon, a race of enhanced women living on the island of Themyscira. Amazons are a powerful warrior race and have access to several abilities and physical aspects not available to regular humans. For starters, they are highly durable and long-lived. They are simply not affected by human ailments and damage like your regular humans.

The second reason is the fact that Wonder Woman is a demigoddess. Originally Wonder Woman was iconic as being crafted from clay and brought to life by various Olympic Gods. However, the most recent changes to Wonder Woman’s origin story revealed that Wonder Woman was conceived and brought to this world through the usual means. Hippolyta and Zeus had a romantic affair, resulting in Wonder Woman being born and her sibling. Hippolyta had to keep this a secret as long as possible due to Hera’s jealousy and Diana’s safety.

So Wonder Woman’s divine origin makes her even more durable than your regular Amazon and has a much longer lifespan

The third reason are the divine gifts that Wonder Woman received, which also separates her from other Amazons. As the Champion of Themyscira, Wonder Woman was blessed by some of the most prominent gods of the Olympian Pantheon, which enhanced some aspects of her personality and body.

Learning all of that, you might be shocked to realize that despite her awesome powers, Wonder Woman has quite a few weaknesses

Wonder Woman is weak to guns and other powerful man-made weapons

We’ve seen Wonder Woman tanking insane levels of damage over the years, and she seems especially resistant to magic and blunt attacks, as well as surviving the harsh environment of space, but there are a few things that Wonder Woman can be injured with, with relative ease. Bullets and sharp-edged weapons like swords.

Wonder Woman was never immune to bullets. She was rather weak to their effect in most incarnations of the character, and even though this “weakness” is certain to slow her down, it’s highly unlikely that getting hit by a bullet is able to completely kill her due to her fast-acting healing factor. She once survived being hit in the head with a bullet made out of Eighth Metal which is fairly known to be among the most powerful metals in the DC Universe.

Wonder Woman is also, by this logic, weak to swords. The sharp edges are able to injure her hard and durable skin, but as it’s the case with bullets, it very rarely kills her.

Wonder Woman deflects bullets with her Bracelets of Submission

Wonder Woman has several types of weaponry and ancient artifacts at her disposal. Notably, she has a set of bracelets made out of Eighth Metal which is nearly indestructible, and in most situations in which Wonder Woman finds herself being hit by bullets, she has reflexes fast enough to deflect the bullets, leaving her unharmed.

So no, it might seem like Wonder Woman is bulletproof, but it’s actually the Bracelets of Submission that are bulletproof and doing all the work when it comes to projectile weapons. To tank seriously heavy weaponry, Wonder Woman uses Themysciran Shield, crafted according to her people’s warrior and crafting traditions. Themysciran Shield most likely can deflect bullets as well.

Is Wonder Woman bulletproof in the movies?

Wonder Woman appeared in live-action several times, and like with comics, the extent of her powers changed. Most recently, Wonder Woman was featured in the DCEU, and even though she is highly durable, she still wasn’t bulletproof and was able to be injured by both powerful human weapons and edged weapons.

We’ve seen Wonder Woman tanking a hit from Doomsday, surviving Cheetah, getting electrocuted and absolutely pummeled by Superman, and she was able to survive all of it and relatively quickly repair the damage.

This is due to her hard skin and other bodily tissues that naturally deflect most forms of damage. Wonder Woman is still “weak” to bullets and would not be able to tank the damage as easily as she does with explosions and inhospitable conditions that she faces on the regular while flying.
