One of the things that we know about the world of Star Wars is that there are a lot of strong warriors and fighters. Most of the strongest characters are capable of wielding the Force. Still, some of the strongest soldiers come from the Mandalorian race, often called the strongest race of warriors in the entire galaxy. But the thing about the Mandalorians is that they tend to have a dislike for Jedi. So, why do the Mandalorians hate the Jedi?
The Mandalorians hate the Jedi due to the thousands of years that they have been in conflict with one another. No one knows how this started or who started it, but the fact is that the Mandalorians hated the Jedi for the wars that they had, as it was these conflicts that turned Mandalore into a barren planet.
When it comes to the Star Wars world, many conflicts can be traced to thousands of years before the events of the actual Skywalker Saga. In that regard, no one can be sure why or how these wars started. But the thing is that the sentiments have lasted for thousands of years, especially due to the aftermath. That said, let’s look at why the Mandalorians hate the Jedi.
The Jedi-Mandalorian conflicts
If there’s one thing we know about the Star Wars world, it’s that the Mandalorians are often called the strongest soldiers in the entire galaxy. That’s because the Mandalorians were raised to be strong warriors by their own families, as many years of conflicts with one another and with different people all over the galaxy shaped them into the strong fighters they became.
Protected by Beskar steel armor and armed with some of the best weapons in the entire galaxy, the Mandalorians cannot be bested by just about any army in Star Wars.
But one of the groups of people that the Mandalorians have always had conflicts with are the Jedi. Of course, the Jedi are not soldiers or warriors but peacekeepers protecting the galaxy. And the Jedi have always been rivals to the Mandalorians for reasons that no one could tell because the Jedi-Mandalorian conflicts went on for thousands of years.
The thing about the Mandalorians is that these people are bred for war and have been at war with themselves and others throughout the galaxy. It is possible that, as peacekeepers, the Jedi were forced to try to pacify the Mandalorians and their warmongering ways. And this was probably why they had never-ending conflicts for thousands of years.
Mandalorians may be strong and well-trained, but they don’t understand the power of the Jedi. That’s because the Jedi wield the Force, a weapon that Mandalorians don’t use and is something they can’t comprehend.
But the fact that the Mandalorians struggled against the Force and the skills of the Jedi was what allowed them to evolve into better fighters throughout the years.
In fact, most of the weapons that the Mandalorians developed were made to counter a Jedi’s abilities. Mandalorians are protected by Beskar steel armor, which lightsabers are not capable of slicing through. Moreover, they used weapons and tools that allowed them to bridge the gap between them and the Jedi. Such weapons and tools include flamethrowers, grappling hooks, and even jetpacks.
According to Pre Vizsla, his family fought the Jedi for generations, which means there is a long history between the Jedi and the Mandalorians. Meanwhile, according to the Armorer in ‘The Mandalorian,’ the Jedi were sorcerers that were once enemies of the Mandalorians. In that regard, while the Mandalorians were no longer at war with the Jedi during the latter portion of the Republic’s history, it was clear that they still didn’t like the Jedi.
One of the biggest reasons the Mandalorians are understandably against the Jedi is that Mandalore had been left a barren planet. According to Sabine Wren in ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ Mandalore was once a rich and lush planet full of greenery. However, it had been reduced to a barren wasteland due to the many different wars and battles fought on it.
The wars between the Jedi and the Mandalorians were some of the battles that left Mandalore barren. As such, the Mandalorians have a reason to hate them as the Jedi contributed to the fact that Mandalore had become hardly inhabitable. The entire planet of Mandalore resembles a wasteland with nothing growing on it. And it was only made worse when the Sith bombed the planet and turned it into a harsh world.
So, with that said, the Mandalorians have every reason to despise the Jedi, as they were always in conflict with one another in the past. Nevertheless, the relationships between the Jedi and the Mandalorians have improved, especially because the likes of Ahsoka Tano, Kanan Jarrus, and Ezra Bridger helped Bo-Katan Kryze and the Mandalorians during the Skywalker Saga.
Do Mandalorians hate Sith?
Of course, one of the things that we know about the Mandalorians is that they tend to hate things they don’t understand. For them, the Force is nothing but superstition, and that’s one of the reasons why they never liked or understood the Jedi. In that regard, it goes without saying that they should also hate the Sith as well.
But while they aren’t exactly friendly with the Sith, the Mandalorians actually allied with a few Sith and dark-side Force users in the past for various reasons. The Legends storylines have allowed us to see the Sith and the Mandalorians working together against the Jedi because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Then, during the age of the Clone Wars, Darth Maul once ruled as the shadow leader of Mandalore.
However, no evidence would suggest that the Mandalorians like the Sith or are always willing to work with them. In a way, the only reason why they had to work with the Sith in the past is that they had no choice. But if they had a choice, the Mandalorians wouldn’t be too willing to ally with the Sith, who they know cannot be trusted.
Did any Mandalorians become Jedi?
The thing about the Mandalorians is that they have always been a warrior race that only believes in intangible things, such as the weapons they wield. On top of that, Mandalorians weren’t part of the Republic and were always independent because they never wanted to be ruled by anyone.
As such, while there may have been Force wielders born in Mandalore, the Jedi couldn’t detect them quite easily because Mandalore wasn’t part of the Republic. So, even if there were Force-sensitive children born on Mandalore, the Jedi couldn’t get to them. On top of that, Force-sensitive Mandalorians may have suppressed abilities because they were raised to be Mandalorian warriors who only believed in the warrior’s way and in anything tangible.
Nevertheless, we have seen some Mandalorians becoming Jedi. Tarre Vizsla, born more than a thousand years before the Skywalker Saga, was known as the first and only Mandalorian Jedi in history. He was the one who created the Darksaber, which was the weapon that he used while he was still a Jedi.
Then, during the events of ‘The Mandalorian,’ Grogu became a Mandalorian when Din Djarin formally adopted him. While he was never formally a Jedi, Grogu was taken to the Jedi Temple during his younger years as he was supposed to be trained to be a Jedi. And when Luke Skywalker gave him a choice between returning to Din Djarin or becoming a Jedi, he chose to become a Mandalorian.
Of course, while there is yet to be any confirmation about whether or not Sabine Wren is sensitive to the Force, she called Ahsoka her “master” in the ‘Ahsoka’ series, as it is possible that Tano taught her how to use Ezra Bridger’s lightsaber, regardless of whether or not she is sensitive to the Force.
