‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ was announced as the last installment of this version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In that regard, the individual members of the Guardians were given final runs and unique conclusions to their character arcs. One such member was Gamora, who never returned to the Guardians of the Galaxy and decided to work together with the Ravagers. So, why did Gamora leave the Guardians of the Galaxy and join the Ravagers?
This version of Gamora was never a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy because this was the Gamora that came from the past and before the Guardians were formed. She eventually joined the Ravagers because she wanted a family of her own and was unwilling to be the Gamora that was familiar to Peter Quill.
One of the most important themes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ involves characters following their paths in life, which means that even Gamora needs to follow her path in life as well. As such, we know that Gamora was still trying to make sense of what happened to her after getting transported nine years into the future. So, with that said, let’s look at why Gamora never joined the Guardians again.
The “new” Gamora was never part of the Guardians
Back in the events of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ we first met the original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. They were a ragtag group of misfits that had to join up with one another because they had no choice. In the end, they ended up doing good things together. As such, they formed a group that grew into a colony of different people who wanted to do good in the universe.
One of the original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy was Gamora, who was one of the adopted daughters of Thanos. She left Thanos because she understood just how evil he was and what kind of madness he was capable of. But we all know that her father killed her by sacrificing her life for the sake of the Soul Stone, which could only be obtained by someone willing to sacrifice someone they loved.
In that regard, the original Gamora was dead, and Peter Quill was affected by this because he truly loved her. But in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ we saw that the 2014 version of Thanos could get to 2023 by using Nebula’s Pym particles when they caught her back in that timeline. As a result, even the 2014 version of Gamora, who was yet to meet Peter Quill and the other members of the Guardians, was able to get to 2023. And note that the Gamora of the original timeline was already dead when the 2014 Gamora arrived.
As such, after Thanos and his army were defeated by the Avengers, the 2014 Gamora left Earth and went on her adventures. She didn’t even try to meet up with the other Guardians of the Galaxy members because she didn’t know them.
Nebula was the only one she was familiar with because they grew up as sisters. As such, she had no reason to try to be chummy with the Guardians due to the very fact that this version of Gamora was the one that existed before the events of the 2014 ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie.
That is one of the reasons why Gamora “left” the Guardians of the Galaxy. She was never in it in the first place because this new Gamora was the one that existed before the Guardians were even formed. As such, she could never leave a group she had never joined.
Gamora wanted to follow her own path
While it may be true that this version of Gamora that we saw in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ was never a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, some people wonder why Gamora never joined the Guardians when she had a chance. And it all boils down to following her path in life.
Ever since she was a little girl, Gamora never had a choice in her path in life because Thanos forcibly took her in. After leaving Thanos, she was seemingly given the responsibility to help other people in need all over the galaxy, especially after the people of Xandar christened her as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
There’s also the fact that Gamora didn’t like how Peter Quill often compared her to “his” Gamora. Throughout the entire time they interacted with one another, Quill often talked about how the old Gamora would never do what the new Gamora was doing. In a sense, he was comparing two different versions of Gamora.
The new Gamora couldn’t accept that Peter was comparing her to someone who wasn’t her in a technical manner. Though they were the same person, they weren’t the same in terms of their shared life experiences after 2014 because the old Gamora had a different path that she took. On the other hand, the new Gamora chose her path to follow, and Quill always compared her to his Gamora was quite annoying to him as she knew that she wasn’t that version of Gamora.
Of course, there’s the fact that Gamora wanted a family of her own, and that was what she found when she joined the Ravagers. The old Gamora had her own family in the form of the Guardians, and the new one also wanted to have a family. Her decision to join the Ravagers was probably prompted by her not wanting to follow in the old Gamora’s footsteps because she thought she was now her own person. As such, she decided to team up with the Ravagers instead.
One of the biggest themes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ involves characters following their paths in life, and that was why Gamora had to follow her path without even trying to compare herself to the “better” Gamora that Peter Quill always talked about.
After all, she understood that she was now her person. And because Thanos was now dead, she had no reason to regret making any decision that would make her happy and free.
