Since Sony and Disney made a deal about Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which Tom Holland debuted as the web-slinger in 2016, Sony decided to put more effort into building their own cinematic universe, officially called Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, in which Spider-Man still hasn’t appeared, but some other characters associated with him have.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (without Spider-Man in it) kicked off with ‘Venom’ in 2018, and since then, it spawned two more movies; ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ and ‘Morbius.’ Neither of these movies was critically acclaimed, but both ‘Venom’ movies were commercially successful, which can’t be said for ‘Morbius.’

Still, even though we are now used to getting half-hits and misses from Sony (we’re talking only about this universe, not about the animated Spider-Verse franchise), we can still expect a lot of content in the future, particularly next year when we’re set to get three new movies set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, including ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ which was recently delayed to August 2024 due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ director says the movie’s story is about tragedy!

‘Kraven the Hunter’ will be another attempt from Sony to release a good movie with a villain/anti-hero as the main character. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who previously starred in MCU’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ signed to star as Sergei Kravinoff, also known as Kraven the Hunter, and the movie will also be the first R-rated Marvel movie that Sony ever made.

The first trailer that was released earlier this year promised us a lot of stuff for which we love R-rated movies. We remember when we all wanted ‘Venom’ and ‘Morbius’ to be rated R, and Sony finally decided to give it a shot with ‘Kraven the Hunter.’ Although we’ll need to wait for the movie a bit longer than we previously expected, the movie’s director Jeffrey McDonald Chandor, better known as J. C. Chandor, says that we can expect a tragic tale in ‘Kraven the Hunter.’

“Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this, but the story is a tragedy. When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.”

Sony Announces Release Date for ‘Venom 3’, Delays ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’

When it was first announced, ‘Kraven the Hunter’ was set to be released in January 2023 before it was moved to October. We got the first trailer earlier this year before the movie was delayed once again to August 2024. The movie was supposed to be the fourth movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, but after this latest delay and the announcement of ‘Venom 3,’ it is now set to be the sixth one since ‘Madame Web’ is coming in February, and ‘Venom 3’ in July 2024.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ will be the first live-action portrayal of the character, and this October, the owners of PS5 will be able to play ‘Spider-Man 2,’ a video game in which Kraven will be one of two main antagonists, alongside Venom.

The ‘Kraven the Hunter’ is directed by J. C. Chandor from a screenplay written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the main character, while Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe also star. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on August 30, 2024.
