One of the characters that are going to be very important in the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ series is Sabine Wren, who was a vital part of the Spectres during the events of ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and is set to have an even bigger role alongside Ahsoka Tano in the ‘Ahsoka’ series. Of course, we did see a lot about Sabine in ‘Rebels’ and the trailer for ‘Ahsoka,’ which allowed us to see her calling Ahsoka “master” even though she was always considered a Mandalorian in ‘Rebels.’ So, is Sabine a Mandalorian or a Jedi?
Sabine Wren has always been a Mandalorian. She was born to House Wren, one of Mandalore’s noble houses. However, because she once wielded the Darksaber, Sabine received lightsaber training from Kanan Jarrus. And because she has Ezra’s lightsaber, she completed her lightsaber training under Ahsoka.
Many things are confusing about the ‘Ahsoka’ series, especially on the side of Sabine Wren, who was featured extensively during the trailers. That’s why a lot of people are wondering whether or not she might be a Jedi. But the truth is that she has always been a Mandalorian by birth. And that’s why we are here to clear things up in relation to whether Sabine is a Mandalorian or a Jedi.
Why does Sabine have Mandalorian armor?
If there’s something unique about the main characters of ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ it’s that the members of the Ghost crew, the Spectres, had their niche. The members come from unique backgrounds and have different specialties. Of course, we know that Kanan Jarrus is a Jedi training a Padawan named Ezra Bridger. But we also know that this team has a weapons specialist in the form of Sabine Wren.
Sabine is one of the female members of the Spectres and is portrayed as a loner and an artist that expresses her uniqueness through her art. Of course, Sabine was the best at using various weapons due to her training. And there’s also the fact that Sabine has Mandalorian armor.
The Mandalorian armor that Sabine Wren already gives out her heritage. That means that she is a Mandalorian by birth and is the only Mandalorian within the ranks of the Spectres. Of course, the Mandalorian armor that Sabine Wren wears comes from her family, one of Mandalore’s noble houses.
Clan Wren has a long history as one of Mandalore’s noble houses, as this clan has followed Mandalore’s ways for thousands of years. In fact, during the Clone Wars, Clan Wren sided with Pre Vizsla and the Death Watch instead of siding with the New Mandalorians and their peaceful ways. That means that Clan Wren has always believed in the warrior way of the Mandalorians, and that’s why Sabine is a natural Mandalorian in terms of her personality and upbringing.
In fact, during the events of ‘Rebels,’ Sabine’s stubbornness as a Mandalorian was always one of the things that the other members of the Spectres pointed out. On top of the fact that she was a loner that didn’t like working with other people, she often tried to handle things the Mandalorian way by fighting and making a mess of things instead of using the more peaceful and diplomatic approach. And when dealing with other Mandalorians, she would rather do things the Mandalorian way by proving her strength as a Mandalorian.
That means that Sabine is worthy of her Beskar Steel armor, as this suit of armor has been passed down through Clan Wren for hundreds of years. The fact that she was able to showcase her strength as a warrior and loyalty to the Mandalorians made her more than worthy of wearing the Mandalorian armor that she dons.
Sabine trained with a lightsaber
Even though we know that Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian, she trained in the ways of the lightsaber during the events of ‘Rebels.’ That’s because she could wield the Darksaber after finding it on Dathomir during one of the missions the Spectres undertook on that planet. And after getting the blessing from Fenn Rau, Sabine learned how to use the Darksaber.
Sabine’s training with the Darksaber started with the basics, as she had to learn the fundamental forms of lightsaber combat from Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger. But Kanan was a bit too tough on Sabine because she was too stubborn regarding her lightsaber training. And the reason for her stubbornness was rooted in her proud ways as a Mandalorian.
During her training with the Darksaber, Sabine felt that this black lightsaber, which is a symbol of power among the Mandalorians, was a bit too heavy for her, as Kanan revealed that lightsabers could get heavy because energy constantly flows from the user to the Kyber crystal that powers the lightsaber. As such, if the wielder of the lightsaber has doubts that are weighing them down, the lightsaber would also feel heavier in their hands.
In Sabine’s case, her doubts about her place in her family, which turned its back on her, and her status as a Mandalorian were weighing her down. But after accepting herself more, Sabine learned to use the Darksaber effectively. Still, she didn’t want to be the one to wield this lightsaber permanently because she felt that she only found the Darksaber so that she could give it to the person who was worthy of it.
After letting go of the Darksaber, Sabine received Ezra’s lightsaber and held on to it for safekeeping after disappearing with Grand Admiral Thrawn in the final battle against the Chiss military commander. We can assume that Ahsoka Tano continued Sabine’s lightsaber training while Ezra was away, as it was important for her to master the use of the lightsaber if ever they wanted to find Ezra in the deepest corners of the galaxy.
In that regard, while it may be true that Sabine wields a lightsaber, we aren’t sure whether she is sensitive to the Force. After all, there were no indications in ‘Rebels’ that Sabine may be Force-sensitive. It is possible that her Mandalorian stubbornness kept her Force sensitivity dormant throughout her entire life. But we are leaning toward the possibility that she is as true a Mandalorian as any Mandalorian can be but is skilled in using a lightsaber.
Does Sabine become Mandalore?
Even though Sabine may be skilled and strong, there is no chance that she would ever be Mandalore. That’s because Sabine never wanted to take up a leadership position among her Mandalorian people, as she quickly accepted that Bo-Katan Kryze was the better leader. That was why she gave the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, as she realized she had the experience, name, and leadership skills to lead the people of Mandalore against the Empire.
Of course, during the events of season 3 of ‘The Mandalorian,’ Bo-Katan finally took her place as the leader of Mandalore after she, Din Djarin, and the other Mandalorians finally took back Mandalore from the Imperial remnants on that planet. And they crowned Bo-Katan as the Mandalorians’ leader after defeating Moff Gideon’s forces.
So, in that regard, Sabine will unlikely be a Mandalorian leader, especially because she spent more time on Lothal than on Mandalore with her family. She might be loyal to her Mandalorian roots, but she also found a family in the form of the Spectres. And she also made a promise to Ezra that she would find her while protecting Lothal from the Imperial forces.
