Hawkeye is, without a doubt, one of those characters the fans of the MCU franchise respect the most because he’s been present for over a decade in various movies and always brought meaning and depth to the overall storyline. Clint appeared on-screen in five movies; in one movie, he is referenced and even got his own TV show. This tells a lot about this character’s legacy, and in this article, you can find all seven of Hawkeye’s appearances in order.

Hawkeye’s appearances in movies & TV shows in order – at a glance

Hawkeye has been a part of the MCU for more than two decades now, and even though he does not have a standalone movie, he has appeared in many movies in the franchise. In 2021, he got his mini-series titled ‘Hawkeye’. The first movie Clint Barton appeared in was ‘Thor’ in 2011, where we met him as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s valuable agent and extraordinary archer. Since then, it was clear that we’ll see him again as a part of Nick Fury’s team.

Here are all the movies Hawkeye appeared in, including the ‘Hawkeye’ TV mini-series:

  1. ‘Thor’ (2011)
  2. ‘The Avengers’ (2012)
  3. ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015)
  4. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016)
  5. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)
  6. ‘Black Widow’ (2021)
  7. ‘Hawkeye’ (2021)

Hawkeye played an important part in all of these movies. Even though he is not superpowered and is often regarded as the weakest Avenger, his importance to the team has often been proven. Besides being an excellent archer, his fatherly instincts, friendship with Black Widow, and love for his family marked his character development.

Are Hawkeye’s appearances in movies and TV shows connected? Do you need to watch them in a specific order?

The MCU franchise is one of the biggest ones out there, and what is amazing about it is that all the movies and shows are connected in some way. So, the same goes for the movies and shows where Hawkeye appears. To get the best experience of Clint’s character, you should watch all the movies where he appears and the show.

I’d recommend their release date if you are interested in what specific order to watch. Only one exception: watch ‘Black Widow’ before ‘Avengers: Endgame’, but watching ‘Black Widow’ is optional.

All of Hawkeye’s appearances are connected, and they gradually build Clint’s character more and more. In ‘Thor’ we superficially meet Hawkeye and get a glimpse of his abilities. In ‘Avengers,’ we see how he functions as a part of a superhero group, and in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ we meet his family.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ puts him on the opposite side of his best friend, and in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ he loses his way as Ronin but accepts his mistakes later. In ‘Hawkeye,’ the mistakes he made as Ronin came knocking, and he meets a new archer.

What is the best way to watch Hawkeye’s appearances?

The best way to watch Hawkeye’s movies and show appearances is by release date, with one exception mentioned below. You’ll know Clint Barton best by watching them in that order. His character development is done gradually but with enough detail to really get to know his personality, principles, and moral compass.

This means you should start with ‘Thor,’ then ‘Avengers,’ Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Black Widow’ (because the event of the movie occurs just after the events in Civil War, but note that Clint has no screen time), ‘Avengers: Endgame, and finally ‘Hawkeye.’ This is the best way to get the best experience of Hawkeye’s story arc.

Hawkeye’s appearances in movies and TV shows in order by their release date:

1. ‘Thor’ (2011)

When Odin banished Thor from Asgard and stripped him of his power, the God of Thunder landed on Earth and was separated from Mjolnir. The mighty hammer landed in a desert in New Mexico, where many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents gathered to secure the perimeter. Hawkeye was one of the agents there, guarding the site, watching like a hawk with his bow and arrows always ready.

2. ‘The Avengers’ (2012)

In this movie, Clint initially falls under Loki’s influence but later comes to his senses and becomes one of the Avengers. Alongside Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America, he defends Earth from the Loki and Chitauri invasion.

3. ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015)

This movie introduces the other side of Clint’s life. We learn that he has a wife and children who live on a private farm far from public. His family’s safety is Clint’s priority, and that’s why almost anyone knew about that part of his life. It also becomes more clear that Clint is more vulnerable than other Avengers, and the day will come when he will need to retire.

4. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016)

‘Captain America: Civil War’ divided the Avengers over deciding what to do about the Sokovia Accords. Hawkeye was against the Accords, which led to a great confrontation among the group and showed how each thought, what they stood for, etc. The decision eventually led Clint to house arrest, and that’s why he wasn’t in ‘Infinity War.’

5. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)

Thanos’ snap left the whole universe in chaos. But for Clint felt like his whole life had been crushed and his heart ripped from his chest. He lost his family in the ‘blip,’ so he went on a killing spree as Ronin, trying to ease his pain. However, nothing helped until Natasha approached him and encouraged him there was hope to bring his family and everyone that disappeared five years ago back.

6. ‘Black Widow’ (2021)

In this movie, Clint has no screen time, but it is on this list because there are many references to Natasha’s and Cint’s time in Budapest, and that was something we waited for years to find out what happened there. Also, Clint’s voice can be heard in Black Widow’s earpiece.

7. ‘Hawkeye’ (2021)

This show is set sometime after the events in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Clint has to face some things from his past, most notably mistakes he made as Ronin. He also collaborates with another archer, Kate Bishop, and an unusual but interesting friendship is born.

Where to watch the abovementioned movies?

You can watch all the MCU movies in which Hawkeye appears on the Disney+ platform. The TV show ‘Hawkeye’ is also available to stream there. All the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and shows are available on the platform, and you’ll need a subscription to enjoy the service.

Will there be more movies or shows featuring Hawkeye?

After star actor Jeremy Renner suffered a snowplow accident in 2022 that left him in critical condition, it was questionable if he’ll ever return as Hawkeye again. Luckily, Renner assured the fans that he would return to the MCU, but it is unclear in what project. Our best guess is that we’ll see him in ‘Avengers: Kang Dinasty’ since he is still one of the three original Avengers alive in the MCU. However, nothing is confirmed yet.
