Loki is the MCU’s most popular anti-villain we love to hate. He is a truly complex and morally grey character associated with one of the greatest Avengers that the screen has ever seen. This is why he appeared in numerous projects and even got his own TV show. He is likely to play an extremely important role in the future of the MCU.
Loki so far has appeared in 7 MCU movies and two seasons of a TV show. We decided to put together this guide on all of Loki’s MCU appearances so you can re-familiarize yourself with his story now that he is a pretty big deal in the MCU.
All movies and shows featuring Loki in release date order
As we’ve mentioned, several versions of Loki appeared in 9 MCU projects so far. Starting with his introduction in 2011 ‘Thor’ and his last appearance in ‘Loki’ Season 2. Considering that Loki was among the first MCU characters to come into contact with a variant of Kang the Conqueror, who is supposed to be the next big villain from the MCU, we’re sure that this list is going to get only longer. Here are all Loki’s MCU appearances:
- ‘Thor’ (2011)
- ‘The Avengers’ (2012)
- ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (2013)
- ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017)
- ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)
- ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)
- ‘Loki’ Season 1 (2021)
- ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’ (2023)
- ‘Loki’ Season 2 (2023)
Are Loki’s MCU appearances connected? What’s the best way to watch them?
All movies and shows in which Loki appears in the MCU are connected and within the same continuity. We follow his journey from being merely a jealous brother to his first plot and villainous actions that inevitably lead to his death. His journey is then continued through his variant, who becomes an unlikely “hero” and restores the multiverse to its proper place by becoming a god of stories and the heart of Yggdrasil.
The best way to watch all of Loki’s appearances is in their release date order. This will allow you to follow a timeline of everything that went down, from his first appearance to his death to the appearances of his alternate versions. Even though MCU’s chronological timeline is not always easy to follow or intuitive, in Loki’s case, the release date order is still your best bet.
All Loki’s movies and appearances in chronological order:
Considering that ‘Loki’ season 2 did have some effect on the overall chronological timeline of the MCU, the watch order does not properly follow the release date order:
- ‘Thor’ (2011)
- ‘The Avengers’ (2012)
- ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (2013)
- ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017)
- ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017)
- ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)
- ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)
- ‘Loki’ Season 1 (2021)
- ‘Loki’ Season 2 (2023)
- ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’ (2023) (If you ignore the post-credits scene)
1. ‘Thor’ (2011)
The first time Loki was introduced to the MCU was in 2011 ‘Thor.’ He is a jealous, adopted younger brother of the God of Thunder who is set to inherit Asgard. Loki plans to usurp the throne since he believes a lot more respect is owed to him than others give him.
He makes an alliance with the Frost Giants, the traditional enemies of Asgard, in an attempt to prove himself to Odin. This inevitably leads to a clash with Thor, even though Loki ultimately “makes peace” with his brother. This is only the beginning of his scheming.
2. ‘The Avengers’ (2012)
Following his exile from Asgard due to his actions in the previous movie, Loki is wandering the Universe looking for ways to scheme his way back to power. He makes contact with The Other, who offers him a deal.
Loki is supposed to retrieve Tesseract for him and, in exchange, will receive the army of warmongering Chitauri, which he can subsequently use to conquer humanity. Loki accepts the deal and ultimately clashes with his brother and the Avengers yet again.
3. ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (2013)
Loki finds himself being judged yet again for his actions against Asgard and humanity and is imprisoned for life in the dungeons. His ego is hurt more than anything, however. When Malekith comes seeking Aether, the opportunity again presents itself for Loki to raze Asgard to the ground and conspire against his brother.
4. ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017)
Following the events of ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ Loki has been sitting on the throne of Asgard for quite some time, banishing Odin to Earth to live out the rest of his days in a retirement home that soon Loki and Thor find out has been demolished.
Thor quickly figures out that Loki has been impersonating their father. Thor and Loki set out to find their father, and along the way, they find something much worse: Hela. The two brothers will form an uneasy alliance yet again.
5. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)
‘Infinity War’ was the end of the journey for this variant of Loki. Aboard the Statesman, Loki finds that his previous coalition with Thanos will cost him dearly. At first, Loki tries to manipulate and scheme his way out of danger by feigning loyalty to Thanos, but the Mad Titan has neither the patience nor is he dumb enough to fall for it.
Loki attempts to assassinate Thanos but fails, which, in turn, costs him his whole life. Thor will remain affected by the loss of his brother until the end of his days.
6. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the first movie in which an alternative Loki version appears. He is briefly apprehended by the Avengers but manages to use the moment of distraction to use the Tesseract and teleport himself away. By doing that, he creates a branched timeline, all about which we will find out during Loki’s next appearance.
7. ‘Loki’ Season 1 (2021)
The first season of ‘Loki,’ released in 2021, was the first solo appearance of Loki in the MCU. It follows the adventures of an alternate variant of Loki, who finds himself in the middle of a temporal mess and captured by the TVA due to his unauthorized use of Tesseract. In the show, Loki becomes a part of various temporal shenanigans as he interacts with TVA agents, including Mobius M. Mobius and his own alternate variants.
He becomes aware of the Sacred Timeline, the TVA’s mission to prevent branching realities, and the fact that they need to keep He Who Remains alive in as many realities as possible. By the end of the show, however, Sylvie Lufeydottir kills He Who Remains, which means that there will be long-lasting consequences for the rest of the MCU.
‘Loki’ Season 2 (2023) (Upcoming)
Season 2 finale of ‘Loki’ show revealed that the show indeed takes place before the ‘Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ since Mobius implies that Kang the Conqueror attacked the Quantum realm as a consequence of all of the extra timelines being allowed to exist.
This is something that wouldn’t be possible without Loki’s sacrifice to turn Temporal Loom into Yggdrasil.
8. ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’ (2023)
Loki briefly appears in the post-credits scenes of the third Ant-Man movie. Following Scott Lang’s conflict with the villainous variant of Nathaniel Richards, aka Kang the Conqueror, Loki and Mobius M. Mobius can be seen back in the 19th century locating another Kang variant, Victor Timely.
