The original ‘Aquaman’ movie was released almost five years ago, in December 2018, and considering it was a well-received movie that became the highest-grossing DC movie of all time with $1.148 billion grossed worldwide, one would think the sequel, the upcoming ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ would be one of the most-anticipated movies of the year. Well, not really.
With everything going around DC and the controversies that follow this upcoming sequel, not to mention all the commercial flops that DCEU has endured so far, it would be a huge miracle if this movie would even break even, let alone reach anywhere close to the original movie’s commercial success.
Whether we like it or not, DC fans have already given up on DC Extended Universe, as shown by the latest commercial results. The canon of this dying franchise will be closed for good with the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ and to tell you the truth, with everything that happened, it’s almost sad to see Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman meet such an end.
Warner Bros. Pictures finally remembered they have one more DCEU movie to release!
Following the commercial failures of ‘Black Adam,’ ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ ‘The Flash,’ and ‘Blue Beetle,’ it looks like Warner Bros. has also abandoned all hopes, and they apparently have zero faith for the upcoming ‘Aquaman’ sequel.
Regardless, the movie has been filmed, so now they can only release it and hope for the best. We aren’t expecting to see some huge marketing campaign, particularly because the ongoing strikes are still prohibiting actors from promoting their movies, but at least we could get some first official footage.
And just when we thought that Warner Bros. and DC Studios had totally forgotten that this movie was supposed to come out, they officially announced today that the first official trailer for ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will be revealed this Thursday, September 14. The first short teaser that features the first footage from the movie has also been revealed, and you can check it out here:
We are totally aware that this movie will have a really hard time at the box office, but how it’s going to do critically, we won’t know before December 20, when the movie is scheduled to be released. Some rumors circulating social media claim the movie was badly received during test screenings, but let’s remember that those same rumors once claimed that ‘The Flash’ was one of the best DC movies ever made. So, let’s wait and see for ourselves.
James Wan, the original movie’s director, has returned to helm the sequel, which also sees the return of Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman in the respective roles. ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2023.
