The entire events of episode 5 of ‘Ahsoka’ was a storm of different emotions due to the fact that we finally got to see a reunion between Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker while also seeing the live-action portrayal of the Clone Wars and the different characters involved in that galactic war. But the highlight was the duel between Ahsoka and Anakin as the master tried to teach his apprentice a valuable lesson. Ahsoka bested her master but momentarily had yellow Sith eyes as she struggled to choose her final move. So, why did Ahsoka have Sith eyes while fighting Anakin?
Ahsoka had yellow Sith eyes in the final stages of her fight with Anakin, as this symbolized the inner struggle between her light and dark sides. The yellow eyes showed that she had every opportunity to turn to the dark side by slaying Anakin in the World Between Worlds. But she chose against it and decided “to live” instead.
There were a lot of different ways for people to portray the lessons that Anakin taught Ahsoka and the different things that Ahsoka learned in that encounter with her master in the World Between Worlds. But the important part was that Ahsoka overcame her inner darkness to be a better version of herself. So, with that said, let’s look at the reason why Ahsoka had Sith eyes while fighting Anakin.
Ahsoka’s inner struggles
One of the most important parts of the ‘Ahsoka’ series is that Ahsoka Tano seems to have inner struggles. This was something that was evident way back in ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ where we saw Ahsoka struggling to accept that her former master, Anakin Skywalker, had fallen to the dark side and became Darth Vader. And while Vader is no longer around in ‘Ahsoka,’ Ahsoka is still struggling with inner battles that were holding her back.
Ahsoka has been struggling with accepting her past and embracing who she was. In many ways, Ahsoka tried to reject the fact that she was a Jedi, as she often repeated this fact whenever people called her one. On top of that, she has always rejected her place as part of a legacy that includes Anakin Skywalker because she understood that her master brought death and destruction to the galaxy when he fell to the dark side.
As such, in episode 5 of ‘Ahsoka,’ it was clear that Anakin was trying to teach her a lesson that she found difficult to grasp. In the World Between Worlds, Anakin makes her choose between living and dying, and it is clear that he is trying to force her to come to terms with her past and the things that she went through in her life.
Of course, Anakin also told Ahsoka that, whether she liked it or not, she was part of a larger legacy that included him, Obi-Wan, and all of the other masters who came before them. But Ahsoka tried to reject this legacy because of the fact that she feared the death and destruction that Anakin caused when he fell to the dark side.
That was when it became clear that Ahsoka feared her inner darkness as well, and this was the reason why she struggled to come to terms with her past and the legacy that she was part of.
In his Sith Lord form, Anakin challenged Ahsoka once more as he dominated her during the earlier part of the bout. But when Ahsoka was able to find a way to neutralize her former master, she disarmed him and used his own red lightsaber against him by holding it against his neck.
It was at this moment that Ahsoka’s eyes turned yellow, similar to the eyes that her master had at that moment. We know that these yellow eyes often indicate a person’s fall to the dark side as the eyes are windows to the soul and can show the person’s inner darkness.
So, with that, it was clear that Ahsoka herself was also struggling with the same inner darkness that her master had previously struggled with. This was the darkness she feared when she rejected her past and her place as part of a greater legacy that included the likes of Anakin, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Dooku, and Yoda. And this inner darkness surfaced at that very moment when she had a chance to slay Anakin’s manifestation in the World Between Worlds.
Rejecting the dark side
As Ahsoka held Anakin’s red lightsaber against him, she had every opportunity to pull the proverbial trigger immediately. But instead of doing so, she answered her master’s question by telling him that she chose to live.
By telling Anakin that she chose to live, she rejected her inner darkness and accepted it as part of her identity. Every Jedi in history had an inner darkness that formed part and parcel of their identity, and Ahsoka always feared this inner darkness and what it could do to her and to the people she loved.
But then, she threw Anakin’s lightsaber away and chose to live. This was the same decision that Luke Skywalker made when the emperor gave him a choice to either kill his father to become his new apprentice or die with Vader. And we all know that Luke chose to spare his father because he rejected the same darkness that engulfed Anakin Skywalker long ago.
In the same way, Ahsoka also rejected this darkness. She knew and understood that this darkness was part of her, but she rejected it and ensured it would never define her legacy or future. That was what Anakin wanted her to do the entire time when he made her choose between living or dying.
By telling Anakin that she chose to live, she was telling him that she had accepted her past and who she was, including the darkness that was inside her. But that did not mean she was willing to embrace the darkness inside her heart. Instead, she accepted it as a part of herself and decided that she would never hold herself back again just because she feared the possibility of this darkness from surfacing. And by overcoming her inner darkness, she was now ready to live anew without hesitation or regret.
