Even though it’s been two years since the latest live-action ‘Spider-Man’ movie, 2023 is a really good year for web-slinger fans. Last June, we watched ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ one of the most acclaimed movies of the year, which set up the stage for the finale of the ‘Spider-Verse’ trilogy in ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ for which we can’t wait to arrive. Also, owners of the PlayStation 5 console will finally play the anticipated ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ video game, which is set to arrive this October.
There have been countless video games based on Spider-Man on various platforms in history, but Insomniac Games’ ‘Spider-Man,’ which was released in 2018 exclusively on PlayStation 4, is the most successful game of that kind yet. The game was sold in over 20 million copies, making it the most successful PlayStation 4 exclusive game of all time.
The game’s success led to a three-episode DLC in 2018, a spin-off game ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ in 2020, and the remastered version of the original game, which was also released in 2020. Three years later, millions of fans expect the full sequel to the original game and the ‘Miles Morales’ spin-off.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ directors say the upcoming video game is ‘the ultimate fantasy’ for superhero fans
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ is one of the year’s most anticipated games and a possible Game of the Year contender. The game’s story will follow both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable characters in their next adventure, in which they’ll face off against Venom (who won’t be Eddie Brock) and Kraven the Hunter, alongside many other supporting villains, out of which some return from the previous games.
The game is arriving next month, and many players have already pre-ordered it. Now, in an interview with Inverse, the game’s directors, Bryan Intihar and Ryan Smith, who worked on both previous games in the franchise, have dropped more teases to make the players even more excited.
“There’s a reason the previous games open up with swinging right away. That’s the ultimate fantasy. One of the things we set out to do from day one was honor the fact that being Spider-Man is such a fantasy for so many people. They say anybody can wear the mask, but we want anybody to wear the mask and be good at wearing the mask at the same time. The barrier of entry should be pretty low.”

“In combat, how Peter’s able to leverage those symbiote abilities is really about the transformation. He isn’t just leading with a fist. He’s got tentacles, and you can stick enemies to the wall. You can grab a group of enemies and launch them. It’s an opportunity for putting power out into the gameplay space a little bit differently than we would’ve done before by interacting with more enemies.”

Insomniac’s ‘Spider-Man’ franchise established a new universe in Marvel’s Multiverse, officially known as Earth-1048. While the games were mainly faithful to the characters, some stories have been changed to fit them into the game’s narrative. For example, in both comics and the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise, Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man after Peter Parker is killed, but Peter becomes Miles’ mentor and teammate in the game. More such changes are certainly only the way, given that it was confirmed that Venom, the main villain in the upcoming sequel, won’t be Eddie Brock.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ is set to be released on October 20, 2023, exclusively on PS5.
