Hugh Jackman Rumored to Stay MCU’s Wolverine Until ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

Since superhero movies became mainstream, there have been a lot of actors who were perfectly cast as the characters they played, but only a few of them were such perfect castings that not even the studios are daring to replace them, at least not yet. Hugh Jackman is certainly one of those actors. This legendary Wolverine actor debuted as Logan in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’ back when he wasn’t such a known name.
Jackman eventually proved that he was born to play Wolverine, and he played the character for 17 years, which earned him the Guinness World Record for “longest career as a live-action Marvel character.” Although Jackman announced that 2017’s ‘Logan’ is his last movie in which he portrayed Wolverine, it was obvious that the character of Wolverine would need to return eventually to the big screen, particularly after Marvel Studios reacquired the rights to the character in 2019. Wolverine’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will happen next year in ‘Deadpool 3,’ and the Wolverine will be played by, well, who else than Hugh Jackman.
New MCU Wolverine won’t be picked before ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
‘Deadpool 3’ was highly anticipated even before its official announcement, but when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced Wolverine’s return, the upcoming Deadpool threequel immediately became probably the most anticipated MCU project at this moment. However, the fans know that Jackman won’t be MCU’s main Wolverine once the entire rebooted roster of X-Men joins the franchise, but the franchise still didn’t get to that point.
According to MyTimeToSayHello, the story of ‘Deadpool 3’ will follow the titular anti-hero as he’s trying to find the perfect Wolverine throughout the Multiverse, but after encountering numerous different variants played by different actors, he ultimately realizes that Hugh Jackman cannot be recast. This rumor somewhat complements the previous rumor that claimed ‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe will portray one of Wolverine variants.
Additionally, CanWeGetSomeToast later conveyed that a new live-action Wolverine reportedly won’t be picked until after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ which is rumored to serve as a send-off not only to the current MCU but all the Marvel movies that came before. Of course, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is still in early development, and we can’t be sure how true these rumors are, but if Jackman will play Wolverine again after ‘Deadpool 3,’ that would be awesome.
We know that X-Men will eventually fully join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by a whole new roster of actors. We don’t know when that will happen, but whoever gets to be Hugh Jackman’s successor as the Wolverine, he’ll certainly have big shoes to fill.
‘Deadpool 3’ will feature a storyline that will deal with Wade Wilson’s transition from Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is expected to be a Multiverse movie similar to DC’s ‘The Flash’ in which the viewers will witness the character’s travel throughout the Multiverse and encounter many previous live-action incarnations of the Marvel characters, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra.
Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy, ‘Deadpool 3’ is currently set to be released on May 3, 2024. However, with the production currently on hold, it’s hard to say the movie will stay on that date. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is currently scheduled to be released in May 2027.
