We all know that Luke Skywalker eventually became the new Jedi Grand Master after the defeat of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic. He sought to re-establish the presence of the Jedi in the galaxy by rebuilding the Jedi Order on his own. Of course, we know that he also took up a few students in the three decades that went by between the defeat of the Empire and the events of ‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.’
At this point, we aren’t really sure how many students Luke took in when he tried to rebuild the Jedi Order during the era of the New Republic. Still, we know that he did indeed take a few apprentices who all went on to become Jedi in one form or another. So, with that said, let’s look at all of the Jedi who underwent training under Luke Skywalker.
8. Enyo
Enyo isn’t a character whom fans are familiar with because the only appearance she ever made was in the novel ‘Shadow of the Sith,’ set 22 years after the Battle of Yavin. The book introduced Enyo as a Twi’lek who trained younglings in the Jedi Temple for Luke. That means that she learned the ways of the Force under Luke.
Nothing was mentioned about Enyo other than that she was skilled enough to train younglings in the ways of the Force. We also don’t know what happened to her after that. We can only presume she was also killed when Kylo Ren destroyed Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple on Ossus.
7. Hennix
Hennix was one of the Padawans trained by Luke Skywalker in his Jedi Academy on Ossus. He was one of the most talented out of all of Luke’s students and had a different way of looking at the Force. He saw the Force as a puzzle that had the potential to be unraveled, and that was why he was more interested in learning more about the Force as a scholar.
In that regard, Hennix spent much time learning from different Jedi Holocrons from the High Republic era. He was off-world when Kylo Ren destroyed the Jedi Temple on Ossus. As such, he was one of the few students of Luke who survived the initial destruction of Luke’s Jedi Order. Hennix eventually confronted Kylo Ren and was wounded and killed soon after.
6. Voe
Voe is one of the three Jedi apprentices introduced in Charles Soule and Will Sliney’s ‘The Rise of Kylo Ren’ storyline, which gave us a good look at how Ben Solo became Kylo Ren. In this story, Voe was introduced as one of the hardest-working students under Luke Skywalker, even though she wasn’t quite as talented as Ben Solo.
Even though she understood that she didn’t have Ben’s natural talents, Voe tried to work harder than anyone else to trim the gap between her and her peers. She was one of the Jedi away from Ossus when Kylo Ren destroyed Luke’s Jedi Temple. And when she tried to bring Ben to justice, she was eventually killed.
5. Tai
Tai was the third and final Padawan off-world when Ben Solo destroyed Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple. As such, he survived the destruction of Luke’s Jedi Order with Voe and Hennix. Tai was also Ben’s closest friend, making him the only person who could understand what his best friend was going through.
Initially, Tai refused to believe that his best friend was responsible for destroying the temple. However, when things spiraled out of control, he eventually needed to confront his friend. Tai, however, was killed by Ren, the leader of the Knights of Ren at that time. Tai’s death eventually pushed Ben Solo to embrace the dark side.
4. Grogu
Grogu was one of the survivors of Order 66, as he was already with the Jedi Order long before Luke Skywalker was even born. However, because his species tends to age slowly, Grogu stayed an infant even though he was already more than 50 years old during the time of ‘The Mandalorian.’ Din Djarin, the titular Mandalorian, went on a quest to return Grogu to his people.
Luke eventually rescued Grogu and Din from Moff Gideon’s Dark Troopers. He took Grogu in as the first of his students in his Jedi Order on Ossus, only for Grogu to reject the offer to be his first student because he decided to return to Din Djarin to become a Mandalorian. While Grogu didn’t become a Jedi, he still learned well enough from Luke, who allowed him to remember the things already taught him back when the Jedi Order on Coruscant stood.
3. Ben Solo
Ben Solo was the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, meaning he was born with the natural aptitude of a Skywalker. He eventually joined his uncle, Luke Skywalker, on Ossus to train as a Jedi. His natural skills quickly showed up because he was better than all of Luke’s students.
However, Ben slowly turned to the dark side after learning about the circumstances behind his family’s history and how his mother was connected to Darth Vader. Ren and Snoke were also instrumental in pulling him over to the dark side. In his rage, when he thought that Luke was trying to kill him, he destroyed the Jedi Temple and eventually became Kylo Ren after he killed Ren, the previous leader of the Knights of Ren.
2. Leia Organa Solo
Leia Organa Solo was the first student Luke took in, but this happened before Luke started constructing his Jedi Temple on Ossus. Luke took his twin sister in as his first apprentice just after the defeat of the Empire. Leia progressed well enough as a Jedi Padawan because she also had Luke’s natural abilities.
In fact, Leia’s skills with a lightsaber developed faster than Luke’s skills. However, she decided to abandon her training when she received a vision that warned her that her son would die if she continued down the path of the Jedi. Fearing that Ben’s death would come and that she wouldn’t be able to resist the dark side, Leia abandoned her training a year after she started.
1. Rey Skywalker
The final student Luke trained was Rey Skywalker, who sought him out on Ahch-To during the events of the sequel trilogy. Rey had just learned that she was sensitive to the Force, so she wanted Luke to train her, as she believed that doing so would allow her to help the Resistance defeat Kylo Ren and the First Order.
Luke initially refused to train Rey but gave her a few pointers here and there so that her understanding of the Force would allow her to progress through her training faster. Rey couldn’t continue with her training under Luke because she left him to save her allies from the First Order. Of course, Luke also died when he heroically sacrificed himself to give the Resistance enough time to escape their enemies.
