MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Just last month, rumors were circulating that Watts is ready to return again as ‘Spider-Man’ 4 director.
But as these things usually go, another set of rumors is in circulation, the source being Daniel Richtman, a relatively reliable leaker and scooper who now claims that Marvel Studios is looking at another director to direct ‘Spider-Man 4’ the top choice being Drew Goddard.
Goddard is perhaps best known to the general public as the man behind ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel,’ ‘Lost,’ and ‘The Cabin in the Woods.’ Fans of the MCU hold him in dear memory due to his association with ‘Daredevil’ Netflix series, which was praised for bringing the iconic Man Without Fear to life quite faithfully.
Goddard was also rumored to be the director of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ but that fell through, and Watts came to direct the hit franchise. In this case, Richtman also points out that Watts is not completely out of the picture and that he might return to direct the fourth Spider-Man movie.
Watts, having directed three Spider-Man films and achieved substantial box office success, wanted to step away from superhero filmmaking and even dropped out of directing the upcoming highly-talked-about ‘Fantastic Four’ project. He was also set to join the development of the sixth ‘Final Destination’ movie and served as executive producer for the Star Wars-inspired series under the name ‘Skeleton Crew.’
