Here’s When & Where ‘Echo’ Takes Place in the MCU Timeline

‘Echo’ is the twenty-third television series that is directly part of the MCU and the first series to be released under the Spotlight banner, meaning that you don’t have to watch the previous installments in the MCU to get what ‘Echo’ is about. Some fans thought that this meant that ‘Echo’ doesn’t have too many connections to the mainstream MCU, but this turned out to be false since a lot of the show actually references what has taken place both during the ‘Hawkeye’ series and, references some details that fans can understand only if they watched Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ series. This means that ‘Echo’ does after all have a fixed place in the MCU timeline, and today, we’re going to reveal it.
‘Echo’ takes place after the events of the ‘Hawkeye’
The first episode in the show does a bad job of letting us know when exactly the series takes place since it starts with flashbacks that go thousands of years ago, when Chafa, the first Choctaw, was created. Then we are bombarded with flashback scenes that lead us to the early 2000s, and we can see Maya’s childhood, her mother’s death, and her subsequent move to New York with her father, who has been excommunicated by the family because her grandmother, Chula blamed him for her daughter’s death. She was right, though.
We can’t pinpoint the exact years during which these flashback scenes take place, but we do know that it has to be in the early 2000s since several characters comment how Echo wasn’t seen in Tamaha for close to 20 years.
Then, we can see the events of the ‘Hawkeye’ unfolding. Maya is wrongly accused of going after Ronin since she assumes that he is the one who killed her father, but ultimately, it is revealed that Kingpin was the one responsible for his death. This is the main orientation point of the ‘Echo’ series since those specific events took place in December 2024 as per the official MCU timeline.
Then, we can see Maya shooting Kingpin in the face from point-blank range, thinking that she got rid of him. Soon after that, Maya relocates to Tamaha, Oklahoma, her home town, to send a message to Kingpin’s men; as per Echo’s own words, this takes place 5 months after the events of the ‘Hawkeye’ meaning the first season of ‘Echo’ takes place in May 2025.
The events of the show itself took place over the course of a few days, from Maya arriving at Tamah to sabotaging a weapons shipment headed for New York to kidnapping and discovering that Kingpin is alive after all.
Most of ‘Echo’ takes place in Tamaha, Oklahoma
Now that we’ve figured out when it’s time to discover where. The show begins and ends in Tamaha, Oklahoma, as most of the important events take place there. This is logical since this is Maya’s ancestral town and where she spent her childhood before she was taken to New York.
Most of the flashbacks, however, take place in New York as well as the first part of the “present timeline” since Echo can be seen traveling to Tamaha later on.
Is ‘Echo’ before or after ‘Daredevil: Born Again’
According to our predictions, ‘Echo’ most certainly takes place before ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ We’ve seen a flashback fight with Daredevil in his old costume. But, the most important part of our prediction is the post-credit scene. In the post-credit scene, Kingpin can be seen watching a political show, and two commentators are discussing the New York mayoral race, with one of the commentators commenting that New York doesn’t have a brawler type of mayoral candidate, which is severely needed during these troubling times.
Kingpin can be seen contemplating whether to join the mayoral race, and this is most likely going to be a huge part of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ since it was revealed that both Matt and Kingpin would be looking for ways to reinvent themselves while both serving the people of New York.
Matt will be looking for ways to put his past behind him and will start a new law firm, we don’t know what Kingpin will be doing but we’re pretty certain he’s going to run for Mayor of New York, and win it through heavy manipulation. But take our predictions with a grain of salt because since those first rumors came out, the show has changed its creative team entirely due to execs being unhappy with the first half of the ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ that they’ve been shown.
Is ‘Echo’ canon?
Despite being under Marvel Spotlight, ‘Echo’ is most definitely canon, and not only that, but the release of the show made Netflix’s Defenders Saga canon as well, which means that our favorite street-level superheroes are officially part of the MCU for the first time ever. The events of the ‘Defenders’ Saga were pretty much igonired by the mainline movies, now that they have been added to the official MCU timeline, perhaps they will be expanded upon and referenced in other projects.
