With the release of Marvel’s Spotlight project ‘Echo’ several Marvel-based shows have “officially” become canon to the MCU continuity and were added to the MCU timeline. Of course, we are referring to The Defenders Saga. The Defenders Saga, also known as Street-Level Heroes and Marvel Knights, is a collection of Marvel Television series initially distributed on Netflix. Centered on the New York City vigilantes within the MCU, the saga commenced with the first season of ‘Daredevil’ and concluded with the third season of ‘Jessica Jones.’
Now, the fact that some details from ‘Daredevil’ appeared in ‘Echo’ was proof enough that Marvel Studios is ready to acknowledge these projects as canon to the MCU, despite ignoring the events that took place in pretty much all mainline movies and series released since.
Fans were already wondering whether ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ would make the first three seasons of ‘Daredevil’ canon, until it was announced that ‘Born Again’ will, in fact, be a reboot, now with a new creative team in place and the fact that the show is pretty much being rewritten for the most part, we don’t know what the status of the show currently is in regards of it being a reboot or a continuation of the show.
Then there are also comments that D’Onoforio made following the release of ‘Echo’ he stated that ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will be directly connected to Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ and if Cosmic Circus’ latest podcast is correct, Vincent D’Onofrio made the comments too soon.
According to Alex Perez, The Defenders Saga will be considered “canon but isolated,” implying that the events within them are part of the official Marvel universe, but Marvel may choose to recast characters and adapt stories differently in the future. The status of certain storylines, particularly in ‘Jessica Jones,’ ‘Luke Cage,’ and ‘Iron Fist,’ may not be continued even if the characters return, but they will still be considered canon.
‘Daredevil’ is the series Marvel intends to preserve the most, while other series may have parts omitted or readapted. The details of how the Defenders series will be treated canonically are still being worked out by Marvel. Foggy and Karen’s roles in the ‘Born Again’ storyline were initially planned to be less significant, with a potential plan to kill them off, but recent changes indicate increased involvement for the characters.
‘Born Again’ is described as less of a traditional Season 4 and more of Marvel charting its own course based on established Marvel Television content. In future developments, there will be a greater focus on the criminal underworld. As Fisk assumes the role of Mayor, increased public and federal scrutiny will force him to relinquish some of his assets. These assets will be seized by different factions within the criminal underworld, many of which have not been introduced. One of these unrevealed factions will feature a villain in ‘Spider-Man 4,’ who has never been adapted into live-action before.
And there you have it; if it seemed like the status of The Defenders was less complicated now, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg; what do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
