‘What If…?’ was a breath of fresh air in the MCU; despite the first season of the show receiving a somewhat mixed reception from fans, it was successful enough to warrant additional seasons and expand the multiverse that the creators have been working on drawing loose inspiration from several notable storylines.
Season 2 was released in a somewhat unconventional manner over the course of nine days; a single episode was released, like a gift for fans to unwrap over the holiday season. Long before Season 2 was even released, we knew that Season 3 was in development. However, it’s important to note that Season 3 is rumored to be the show’s last. Now Bard Winderbaum Marvel Studios exec in his talk with Phase Zero, has teased what we can expect regarding characters in the third season.
‘What If…?’ is like, literally remixing, the MCU so it’s harder to introduce characters beacuse you want to see them in live-action first, although we do see Bill Foster as Giant Man in the second season. That’s new. So, in third season, spoiler alert, we do start to push that boundary a little bit more. There’s more fun to be had with the Multiverse and who can kind of come in.
Winderbaum’s comment is a reference to the unofficial rule that characters first need to be introduced in live-action MCU if they were to be a part of ‘What If…?’ but as Winderbaum explained, they started to push that boundary even in season 2 so we can probably expect more “new” characters to appear in season 3.
This aligns with the rumors that Storm will appear in ‘What If…?’ season 3 and honestly it sounds like a great plan. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
