Following ‘Avengers: Endgame’ we knew that the MCU’s prime Avengers cast would have to change. Black Widow sacrificed herself at Vormir, and RDJ’s Iron Man did the same by activating the Infinity Gauntlet and snapping away Thanos and the threat of his army forever.

It seemed like that chapter of the MCU was closed forever, and some new faces would emerge to take over the roles that were, at the time, left vacant. We’ve previously covered who the young Avengers of the MCU could be, and even though the prospect sounds amazing, the execution was less than ideal. MCU found itself in sort of a rough patch in recent times. Both Disney+ shows and cinematic releases suffer from record-low interest, viewership, and profits. The most recent example is ‘The Marvels,’ – the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.

Last year, rumors started going around that Robert Downey Jr. has agreed to return to the MCU, as Iron Man naturally, that was difficult to believe but still the rumors gained momentum and Feige himself was forced to debunk them, sort of, telling the fans that there is no way that the studio is touching Iron Man’s ‘Endgame’ death in any way or form.

Personally, I have to agree, that retconning that moment, or changing it in any significant way would make the current MCU even worse.

Now in his most recent interview for the Esquire, while promoting his upcoming show ‘The Sympathizer’ Downey was asked about his potential return to the MCU. Downey would love to return to the role but he knows as well that the chances of that are slim at best.

“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.

Even though Stark’s death is off-limits, this doesn’t mean that Downey cannot return as a variant, this is the Multiverse Saga after all, and technically, all deaths can be “reversed” when looking through the context of variants.

One notable character already was resurrected by messing with the timelines, Gamora, who died in ‘Infinite Way’ but returned in ‘Endgame’ as her younger variant was pulled accidentally from the past.
