Geoff Johns was born January 25, 1973, in Detroit Michigan. After finding an old box of comics in his Grandparents basement Geoff’s luck would forever change. It was here that he was introduced to such characters as The Flash, Superman, Batman and many other DC characters.

Johns attended Michigan State University where he studied media arts, screenwriting, film production and film theory. From there he then set his sights on Los Angeles California.

After arriving in Los Angeles he worked an internship and later as an assistant for film director Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon 4 and Conspiracy Theory). Donner was so instrumental in Geoff’s development that he has sited Donner as being a mentor.

DC Comics

Geoff would get an opportunity at DC to write his own story. The story was STARS and S.T.R.I.P.E and through it, he launched the character Stargirl. For Johns, the Stargirl character was important as it was based upon his sister.

After STARS and S.T.R.I.P.E he was afforded a large opportunity when he was asked to work on the Infinite Crisis Mini-Series. Due to the widespread acceptance of the series, Johns began to receive notoriety. With his newfound fame, he would follow Infinite Crisis with work on one of his favorite heroes, The Flash.

While working on The Flash he was responsible for fan-favorites such as Rebirth and Flashpoint.

Continued work

Shortly after this he worked on many titles and gave them some of the most iconic storylines to date:

  • Superman – Last Son of Krypton
  • Green Lantern – Blackest Night
  • Batman – Earth One
  • Justice Society of America
  • Green Lantern – Sinestro Corps War

As DC began to usher in a new era with the launch of the New 52, so to did Geoff Johns. During this relaunch, he along with a few others were responsible for the recreation of many origin stories, story arcs, characters and many other things.

Most recent

As it currently stands, Johns is a driving force behind the Doomsday Clock story and was the Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics.

Over the last few years, Johns has dabbled in both movie and television. In fact, he was a co-producer for 2011’s Green Lantern movie and an Executive Producer for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. At the time of this writing, he looks to be involved with the 2018 Aquaman movie. Let’s hope this one fares better than his first two attempts.

On the television side, he has been involved with Smallville Blade, Arrow, and The Flash.

DC found a good one when they found Geoff Johns and as I fan I hope they can keep him for as long as he wants to work.
