Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014) but abandoned the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony collaborated with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This partnership led to the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Meanwhile, Sony independently developed “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), along with “Morbius” (2022), which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.
Additionally, Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) is linked to the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Most SSU films received negative reviews, with “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Madame Web” (2024) being criticized, although “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” received mixed reviews. The franchise earned $1.6 billion globally, but “Morbius” and “Madame Web” were commercial disappointments.
Following the flop that was ‘Madme Web’ plenty of fans expected that SSU would call it quits but the latest reports by Deadline show that isn’t exactly the case. This week, a show featuring Spider-Man Noir starring Nicholas Cage has been greenlit and officially entered development, but on the other hand, ‘Silk: Spider Society’ is canceled.
We also have 2 more SSU movies “to look forward to” this year, ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Venom: The Last Dance.’ So we can expect the SSU to only expand in the future. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
