‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ is a 2024 documentary film directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, focusing on Christopher Reeve’s life post-accident and his activism for disability rights. The film, a British-American venture, was co-produced by Words+Pictures, Passion Pictures, and Misfits Entertainment, with Warner Bros Pictures as the distributor.
It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024, followed by acquisition by Warner Bros. Discovery for $15 million. The documentary received praise, with James Gunn of DC Studios expressing being “emotionally floored” by it.
Recently, Deadline reported that the movie will be released in select theaters on September 21, with an encore presentation to follow on the late actor’s birthday, September 25.
The original 1978 ‘Superman’ movie that brought Christopher Reeve his immortal fame followed Superman’s origin story from his infancy on Krypton to his heroic deeds in Metropolis. Alongside Reeve, the ensemble cast includes Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, and others. ‘Superman’ was the most expensive film made up to that point, with a budget of $55 million.
Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, at Warner Bros. Pictures released the following statement:
On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again. It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen. Partnering with our friends at Fathom Events to deliver this very special film to the big screen was an opportunity we could not pass up.
The movie will also be released nationally, but that date remains unknown currently. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
