‘The Acolyte’ is an upcoming television series set in the Star Wars universe, created by Leslye Headland. It takes place at the end of the High Republic era, before the events of the main Star Wars films. Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae are starring in the leading roles.
The show will introduce plenty of new things to the live-action and one of the most important ones is the first-ever Wookie Jedi, Kelnacca played by Joonas Suotamo who previously portrayed Chewbacca, taking over the role from Peter Mayhew.
Kelnacca, is a new character created for the show, he was introduced by showrunner Leslye Headland at Star Wars Celebration Europe on April 8, 2023. Suotamo expressed his excitement about playing a Jedi at the event.
Now it seems that the character will be getting his own Marvel comics. Marvel Comics will reveal new information about Kelnacca’s origins in a one-shot titled “Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1,” coming on September 4. Written by Cavan Scott with art by Marika Cresta, this comic will bridge the gap between The High Republic novels and comics and the upcoming Disney+ series “The Acolyte.” As Scott put it for io9:
It’s been so exciting to draw a line from The Acolyte back to The High Republic era we’ve been building in comics, books, audio and animation. Kelnacca is the perfect character to bridge the gap between the time of Leslye Headland’s spectacular series to the age of Starlight Beacon, the threat of Marchion Ro, and the marauding Nihil. In this comic, we will learn more about one of the most intriguing aspects of Kelnacca’s design: the meaning behind those mysterious tattoos. Along the way we’ll see the struggle of a Padawan and a master who is stoic, wise, and, ultimately, a true practitioner of Light and Life.
