Star Wars has several projects in the works, including Mangold’s new film set thousands of years in the past and a new Rey movie, ‘Star Wars: Episode X,’ with the working title ‘New Jedi Order,’ which hints at the plot.

A new Rey-focused Star Wars movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Originally written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, the script was later taken over by Steven Knight. The story is set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ exploring the post-war, post-First Order galaxy with the Jedi in disarray. Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that Rey is working to fulfill her promise to Luke and rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the ancient books.

Ridley will naturally reprise her role as Rey, but so far, this movie won’t apparently lead to a new trilogy, which is something that Ridley teased in the past and confirmed in her latest talk with SmartLess podcast.

Ridley sat down and explained how she found out about the upcoming movie and revealed that the script is not yet over:

“I’m doing one [new Star Wars movie], for now. I was surprised. I made a movie with my husband, I had one day off shooting and I was invited to breakfast with Kathy Kennedy. We occasionally take a meal together. I thought we were just having breakfast, and my friend was like, ‘Imagine if they’re doing another Rey thing,’ and I was like, ‘I doubt it.’ And halfway through breakfast, she said, ‘We are, how do you feel?’ I was surprised, but it… it’s very cool, different director, different writer, Stephen Knight is writing it, and directing it is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has made some unbelievable documentaries. It’s very exciting, and I shall be reading a script soon-ish.”

Ridley recently opened up about how she would like to see John Boyega reprise his role as Finn, despite the actor burning his bridges with the franchise with a series of accusatory statements related to his treatment in the last three movies. Ridley also touched upon how she feels more in control now since she is older and more experienced.
