Jude Law Discusses Turning Down Key DC Role 2 Decades Ago

The role of Superman is undeniably one of the most coveted in the superhero realm. For those inclined towards such roles, it holds immense allure and ranks among the best opportunities for any actor. However, Hollywood often sees actors forming misconceptions about roles. Consider Sean Connery, who famously turned down Gandalf due to a lack of understanding.

Recently, British actor Jude Law disclosed that over two decades ago, he was offered a superhero role which he declined. Although the project was ultimately shelved, Law’s initial decision would have excluded him from it regardless. At the time, Law was young and had different priorities, a perspective that has since evolved. His subsequent roles include Yon-Rogg in ‘Captain Marvel‘, a youthful Albus Dumbledore in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ series, and Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s action-packed ‘Sherlock Holmes’ franchise.

Jude Law appeared on The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast and shared that he was offered the role of Superman in the early 2000s, but turned it down because it didn’t feel right to him, a decision he now finds ironic. The role was part of Brett Ratner’s planned Superman project, which was announced in 2002 and initially based on J.J. Abrams’ Superman: Flyby script (which also never made it to filming). Here’s his statement on the matter:

“So this is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on.And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yonn-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far.

It was when Brett Ratner was going to direct, I think. And they didn’t have a script, if I remember rightly. Did they have a script? I don’t remember reading one. This is a long time ago. They brought me the suit. They thought, ‘This might change your mind.’

Anyway, I tried it on and I looked in the mirror and part of me initially was like, ‘Wow, this would be a [good thing],’ and then I just thought, ‘No, you can’t – you can’t do this. You can’t.’ And I didn’t sell myself to myself. And I stepped away and the film never happened anyway. So maybe it probably wouldn’t have done anything.”
