Disney’s new Star Wars project, The Acolyte, premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, and is still ongoing. Before its release, many fans were worried about how the series would turn out. The project had become controversial even before its premiere, with uncertainty about its final look. Showrunner Leslye Headland also stirred controversy with her comments on the show and the franchise, making claims that some fans found outrageous. While much of the criticism was ideologically motivated, with some fans review-bombing the show for being “too woke,” there are some genuine issues with the series. A recent cameo highlights one of these problems.

In the most recent episode of The Acolyte, a Jedi resembling the famous Ki-Adi-Mundi appeared briefly. While it’s always nice to see familiar characters, many fans were confused, especially when the end credits confirmed it was indeed him. The confusion stems from the fact that, based on established canon, Ki-Adi-Mundi wasn’t even born at the time the series was set!

As many fans of the franchise know, Ki-Adi-Mundi is a well-known and popular character from the series. He was a high-ranking member of the Jedi Council in the Prequel Series, and his death following Order 66 was a major moment that saddened many fans. Ki-Adi-Mundi had a lot of potential as a character but was, unfortunately, underused.

Many fans wanted more content featuring Ki-Adi-Mundi, but his inclusion in The Acolyte wasn’t what we had in mind. Although it was nice to see him, his presence in the recent episode made absolutely no sense. It broke the canon completely and was nonsensical in every way.

The plot of The Acolyte is set during the High Republic Era, around 132 BBY and earlier. This timing isn’t an issue by itself, but Ki-Adi-Mundi shouldn’t have been alive then. While the current canon doesn’t specify his birthdate, the old EU states he was born in 93 BBY, 39 years after the events of The Acolyte. In the show, he is portrayed as a middle-aged, slightly graying Jedi, implying he was born around 170 BBY at the latest. He was killed in 19 BBY, both in the current and old canon, which is a confirmed fact.

Taking this into account, it would mean that according to the current canon, Ki-Adi-Mundi was at least 150 years old when he was killed following Order 66. While some species in the Star Wars universe are known to live for many years, the Cereans (Ki-Adi-Mundi’s species) weren’t known to live that long before The Acolyte.

Even if we accept that the current canon has extended the lifespan of the Cereans and changed Ki-Adi-Mundi’s birthdate from 93 BBY to something much earlier, there’s another major plot hole to address.

In The Phantom Menace, Ki-Adi-Mundi states that the Sith had been extinct for over a millennium. This line is canon and has remained unchanged. Here’s a direct quote:

QUI-GON stands in a tall stately room. Twelve JEDI sit in a semi-circle.
OBI-WAN stands behind QUI-GON in the center of the room.
The Senior Jedi is MACE WINDU. To his left is an alien Jedi named
KI-ADI-MUNDI, and to his right, the Jedi Master, YODA.

QUI-GON : ...my only conclusion can be that it was a Sith Lord.
MACE WINDU : A Sith Lord?!?
KI-ADI : Impossible! The Sith have been extinct for a millenium.
YODA : The very Republic is threatened, if involved the Sith are.
MACE WINDU : I do not believe they could have returned without us knowing.
YODA : Hard to see, the dark side is. Discover who this assassin is, we
must.
KI-ADI : I sense he will reveal himself again.
MACE WINDU : This attack was with purpose, that is clear, and I agree the
Queen is the target.
YODA : With this Naboo queen you must stay, Qui-Gon. Protect her.
MACE WINDU : We will use all our resources here to unravel this mystery and
discover the identity of your attacker... May the Force be with you.
YODA : May the Force be with you.

The Acolyte is set just a century before The Phantom Menace, yet Ki-Adi-Mundi is aware they are fighting what appears to be a Sith Lord. So, how is this possible?

As mentioned, we can acknowledge that the new canon has revised the timeline and invalidated the old dates, which is acceptable. However, Ki-Adi-Mundi’s line from Episode I remains canon in both versions. This creates a problem with the plot of The Acolyte. Why would Ki-Adi-Mundi state in The Phantom Menace that the Sith had been extinct for over a millennium when he himself encountered a Sith Lord roughly a century earlier? Based on everything that Qui-Gon describes, there’s really no way that Mundi managed to forget how a Sith fights and looks in the span of a hundred years, which makes the scene in Acolyte even sadder.

This discrepancy suggests two possibilities: either “The Master” is not a Sith Lord (despite displaying typical Sith traits), or The Acolyte has mishandled the storyline. The latter seems more likely at this point.

Ultimately, this cannot be considered canon and represents a significant continuity error that lacks logical coherence. It implies that Headland may not have thoroughly understood Star Wars, as she previously suggested. While stretching the canon can be tolerated to some extent, blatantly disregarding it like this undermines the integrity of creating a genuine Star Wars series that balances innovation with respect for established lore.

There is still an opportunity for The Acolyte to address and resolve this plot issue satisfactorily. We hope the series will provide a clear explanation rather than leaving it unresolved, which would only reinforce criticisms of its quality.
