‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ released its 4th episode this week, and the reactions were not good. Following two weeks of “review-bombing” and “review-boosting” depending on which side you’re sitting on, the show faces yet another controversy – one related to pronouns.
Episode 4 features a tiny Tynnan tracker, due to the creature’s both humanoid and rodent-like features, you can’t really be sure which gender the Bazil is. In one scene in the show, Osha can be heard asking about Bazil, referring to the creature’s pronouns:
Is He or They, with us?
You really can’t be sure when it comes to Tynnan. Fans took offense to these pronouns and decided to grill one of the writers, Claire Kiechel, who worked on episode 4 about them. The writer explained how it was a joke, and how it was supposed to be funny beacuse Osha is concerned about the strange furry little creature, but still sensitive to its gender expression.
It’s obviously a joke about pronouns because she’s referring to a strange lil animal creature? Not sure the upset on this one
This is not the first time that the show has been criticized for its LGBT themes. Even before the show’s premiere, Headland explained that it is the gayest Star Wars installment so far. The show also features same-sex relationships, for example, the Coven of Witches of Brendok features Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril who are in what appears to be a romantic relationship.
Recently, the actress playing Jecki Lon admitted that her character has a crush on Osha, despite being a Jedi Padawan.
This pronouns incident is similar to another recent incident related to ‘Tales of the Empire.’ One episode features an unnamed non-binary Jedi and two Sith Inquisitors attacking them are referring to them with correct nonbinary pronouns they/them.
