Emma Roberts Blames the Internet for ‘Madame Web’ Failure: “People just make such a joke out of everything now”

‘Madame Web’ was released a few months ago to a lukewarm critical reception and low audience rating, something we’ve come to expect out of Sony Spider-Man Universe movies. The movie was also a notable box office bomb, but it did see some moderate success on Netflix when people rushed to watch the movie which generated so many memes and online chatter.

Cast members like Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney already commented on the movie’s success, or the lack of it. Johnson blamed the studio executives who meddled in the movie trying to mold it to be everything for everyone and made sure the audience knew that the script that eventually was shot is not the script she signed up to shoot.

Johnson landed herself in hot water with the studio, but it’s not important, the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ actress said she would never do something like that again. Sweeney took on a more stoic approach to the movie, claiming that she was just an actress in the movie, there was also that whole SNL sketch during which the actress made fun of it.

While some cast members blamed the studio, or just pure unluck, Emma Roberts who portrayed Mary Parker, Peter’s mom blamed the “internet culture.” Roberts claims that internet culture is making fun of pretty much everything these days ruining the projects before they even have the opportunity to stand on their two legs.

Things work; things don’t work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they’re going to work or they’re not. And the truth is, you can’t. Things do badly, and then they blow up later on TikTok. Things do well, but then you watch them, and you’re like, “This did well?” There is no secret. It’s about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer. I’m not intimidated by failure, and I’m not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something.

I personally really loved “Madame Web.” I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie. If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.

While the internet can be a brutal place for subpar or even some good projects, you can’t exactly put the blame on people not liking the movie. I do agree that “review-bombing” can snowball and lower the ratings to an extent, but the project’s fate ultimately comes down to how good something is. In this case, maybe we would look toward the cast, the writers, and the directors, you know, people who created the movie, instead of people who created the memes.
