Fans Are Convinced Lady Gaga Will Get an Oscar for Her ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Performance, Following Casting Director’s Comments

‘Joker’ (2019) was initially meant to be a standalone film without sequels. However, Warner Bros. planned for it to inaugurate DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films separate from the DC Extended Universe. Director Todd Phillips expressed interest in a sequel despite the original intention.

By November 2019, the sequel was confirmed in development. Soon after the sequel was announced it was revealed that Lady Gaga will be taking on the role of Harley Quinn alongside Phoenix’s Joker. Todd Phillips later explained that he cast Lady Gaga since he was familiar with her performance since he was a producer on ‘A Star is Born’ and her performance was simply magical.

Lady Gaga recently commented that she plans on making this version of Harley Quinn her own and authentic, which was met with mixed reactions by the fans with some eagerly awaiting to see her performance and some claiming that casting Gaga will take attention away from Phoenix’s Joker.

The latter notion was somewhat confirmed by casting director Francine Maisler who recently spoke about Gaga’s performance to Deadline:

Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good

Following the statements, fans are sure that Gaga has an Oscar on her hands.

There are once again fans who disagree with that notion:

‘Folie à Deux’ is described as a musical drama set in and around Arkham Asylum, but specific plot details haven’t been confirmed officially. The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson. The screenplay was co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set for release in the United States on October 4, 2024, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
