The fourth season of “The Boys,” one of the most-watched superhero shows globally, has been airing since June 13, 2024. Despite being bombed in reviews by irate viewers objecting to its political undertones, the season remains Certified Fresh and is packed with contentious moments.

Among the season’s many intriguing scenes, one in particular has caught the attention of fans. Questions have arisen about what actually happened in this scene and who was on the screen. In response, we’ve decided to investigate the issue for you.

The scene in question involves a nude appearance by Starlight, who is currently at the center of the plot for various reasons, though not in the way you might expect. Fans have noticed a scene showing her naked and are curious whether it was really her on screen or a body double.

The scene did not involve full-frontal nudity but did show Starlight nude from the back, as you can see in the video we have for you:

The scene and Starlight’s entire subplot in this episode sparked significant controversy. Spoilers ahead: the Shapeshifter (whose true identity remains unknown) has taken center stage. This character has appeared as various individuals, including an unnamed woman, Karen, a shady man, and most recently, Starlight—portrayed by actress Erin Moriarty.

In a particularly controversial moment, the Shapeshifter, disguised as Starlight, shares an intimate scene with Hughie. The video above shows the aftermath. Regarding whether it was Erin Moriarty or a body double on screen, no information suggests it was anyone else. Therefore, until the producers confirm otherwise, we can assume it was indeed Erin Moriarty, though she was playing the Shapeshifter, not Starlight.

If you’re concerned about distinguishing the Shapeshifter from the original character they are mimicking, episode director Catriona McKenzie offered a helpful hint:

Erin’s so amazing. We talked about her physicality, we talked about her eyes, and we talked about a stillness because the Shifter doesn’t have the same kind of emotional, intuitive, emotional intelligence that Annie does. And we’ve seen that in the episode; there was just a stillness that she brought to her performance where she’s just a bit more robotic. It was fun working that up with her.

And she’s a natural. Basically, everything’s the opposite of what she’s developed, and she just moved away from her instincts. I think, as a director, it’s more and more about the subtleties of working with actors and working on characters that I find brings such pleasure. The minutia of performative detail is where I think is the goal is, and I love that moment when she gets out of bed and walks past Huey. She walks over to the safe, and you just know we’re in for a ride.

This also suggests that it was indeed Moriarty in the role, as we’ve mentioned until we hear otherwise from the producers.
