Only a few days stand between us and the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ The movie is the first MCU R-rated project, and early projections are already calling it an R-rated hit of the year, having the potential to even outgross ‘Inside Out 2’ Disney’s most profitable movie this summer.
A large part of the marketing campaign has been focused on cameos, variants, and goofs staged by Reynolds and Jackman. But fans have been wondering, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ can’t possibly be “one and done” for the studio. Considering that both characters are iconic and that the movie is set to shake the MCU to the core, fans are wondering whether there is a larger future for Deadpool & Wolverine in the MCU, beyond the threequel.
Feige recently sat down with Phase Zero to discuss such a question, and naturally, Deadpool’s future did come up. The interviewer asked Feige whether he considered the fact that Deadpool will potentially pop up in other MCU properties and how will Deadpool be incorporated into the projects that aren’t necessarily rated R.
Feige answered without revealing too much, he says that it was always the idea to take characters that shouldn’t mix together and put them in a movie:
You know what fun, obviously, about the comics, is anybody pops up anywhere. But also what’s fun about the team-ups in Marvel team-up it’s almost always characters that don’t belong together. I remember sitting in interviews like this when we were promoting ‘Iron Man 2,’ and people knew we had ‘Thor’ in production, and we had announced that we were going to make an ‘Avengers’ movie and people were going “How in the world is Thor, this Norse mythological god, going to be able to be in a scene with Tony Stark? How’s that going to work?” And my answer was, that’s kind of the point of the movie, that’s kind of the whole idea, is take these people that shouldn’t be together and put them together.
Considering this comment and past comments related to Deadpool, X-Men, and the overall future of the MCU we can conclude that Deadpool has a bright future ahead of him, even in PG-13 projects.
